Best Spanish Films

I like The Orphanage (El Orfonato) and

The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo de Diablo)

and have just stumbled on an old arty B&W film of 1962 one of the strangest, surreal, films I've seen: The Exterminating Angel (El Angel Exterminador).

Could anyone advise about good Spanish films, with subtitles, as trying to polish up my Spanish?

"Jamon Jamon". Saw it years ago. Lots of sex, dark humour and carnivorousness, as I recall.

Aha mis amigos y amigas - here is a film back to you as you've been so kind.

El Pasajero (The Passenger) - a Venezuelan short film - it's interesting, sad, amusing and makes you think - well worth seeing.

You can't go wrong with pretty much anything by Almodovar. Penelope Cruz is simply ravishing in Volver...

Nine Queens (it's Argentinian) and Butterfly's Tongue (Spanish). First one is a thriller. Second is set during the Franco era and is very moving.

    Volver
Brilliant film and the only decent performance I think Penelope Cruz has ever done.

You might like a film, from the same people who made The Orphanage, called The Body ...

I saw it on Saturday. It's a good thriller, with supernatural overtones, and a great twist ending,

I think the Spanish films I've seen so far are very good with good acting.

(Also I think Spanish / Catalan etc authors write very good stories too.)

    Muy bien.

I second almost all above. I also quite enjoyed these, even with its flaws and all:

Stockholm (2013) - if you liked Before Sunrise, you'll probably like this.

    Cell 211 (2009) - a suspenseful action thriller in a high-security prison where a riot erupts

    Fermat's Room (2007) - four mathematicians attempt to solve a locked-room puzzle.

The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) - a slow-burn mystery drama of a retired legal advocate revisiting an old case.

The Last Days (2013) - a SF thriller drama that revolves around the events during a mysterious virus that renders people agoraphobic. Flawed, but interesting. I liked what it tried to do.

Estas son mis recomendaciones para la persona que quiere practicar español:
    -Celda 211
-El secreto de sus ojos (Argentina)
    -El laberinto del Fauno
-Airbag (quizá pueda ser demasiado humor español y no haga gracia)
    -Tesis
    -Los lunes al sol
    -Los cronocrímenes
    -Los otros
    -Los sin nombre
    -El espinazo del diablo
    -Tesis sobre un homicidio (Argentina-España)
    -El día de la bestia
    -Eva
    -Rec
    -Abre los ojos

If you have any doubts, I'll be glad answering them.
If you want an specific genre, let me know.

I just belatedly got around to watching Alex de la Iglesia`s La Comunidad this week. By the director of the excellent Day of the Beast it had it`s moments but tipped over into total farce by the end and started to resemble a Benny Hill sketch!! The whole thing played as a sort of black comedy dry-run for rec. Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza must`ve seen it before making their phenomenal horror flick.
