Best Digital Camera under £150??

I want to get my wife a camera for christmas but I know virtually nothing about cameras. I cant ask her without spoiling the surprise so I was wondering if there are any experts who could give me some advice.
She once took a photography course and had a pentax non-digital camera with all the big lenses, and she likes taking all kinds of 'arty' pics.
My budget is £150....Any help and advice would be much appreciated :)

    Specialist forums will always tend to push for a bigger budget than £150


    There are so-called "bridge" cameras that look like old-style SLR film cameras (not interchangeable lens though)

    They look the part, but their images are usually no better than compact cameras. They do have a much bigger zoom lens than compacts.

    Often a compact camera is a better choice because it's more easily carried.


    For £150 it's going to be tricky to get something really good. I just had a look and the £150 cameras seem no better than £80 cameras.

    Bridge cameras do have interchangeable lenses.

    Cameras are very personal things, different ones suit different people either due to the layout of the buttons or the menu system. Surprise her by taking her somewhere they have several working cameras on display such as John Lewis and let her choose. You won't get anything special for £150 but Canon and others do some very good compacts at that price level.

    The item I've linked to below looks like fun, it's not a digital camera, but uses the Fuji Instax Mini Film (similar to Polaroid). Box includes some lenses and gel filers. Worth a look and well under the O.P's budget. Great for taking 'arty' snaps. Note the Fuji Instax film is not included but can be bought cheaply via ebay, amazon etc.
