It's such a shame you can't still get the Nexus 7, or that Google didn't release a successor (the 9 and Pixel C aren't really aimed at the same market) as native Android makes my Nexus 7 nicer to use than my wife's newer Galaxy Tab S which lags with TouchWiz despite a far superior chipset.
For value, I'd still say the Hudl 2 is best but a portable battery charger is maybe advisable if you use it a lot away from mains power. That's about the only issue though.
Argos still had stock a few weeks ago. Obviously varies from branch to branch but they were still there to buy if you shopped around.
Hudl has practally gone from the Tesco website with no stock available. Only listings they have are for refurbished models at £79. I've set up stock alert thought cos got around £40 in Clubcard vouchers

I'm so annoyed, I can't even get the Hudl 2 anymore!. I've managed to get a refurbished Hudl 1, for now and he can have it for Christmas. I know it won't last long though.
What's the next best tablet for the same sort of price? (£100). It's for a 5/6 year old for games and watching YouTube/Netflix?
Watchdog on BBC1 last night had a segment about some 'Hudl's screens was cracking during charging and Tesco are denying its a fault and charge £70 to repair them ... Watchdog has asked people to contact them if anyone else has had same problem .

I wonder if that's why the digitiser on mine stopped working properly. The screen was not cracked and you could see all of it, but only part of the touch screen worked

We were in a similar situation to you. My sons Hudl 1 is almost ready to die after 2 years of plenty of usage so was planning on getting the Hudl 3 for Xmas. After a fair bit of looking around I bought the lenovo yoga 2 8 inch. £130 at John Lewis so 2 year warranty aswel. It's very similar spec to Hudl 2 but with a bigger battery. It ships with kitkat but is upgradable to lollipop and it's a close to stock android skin after the lollipop upgrade. It feels 10x faster than the Hudl 1.

I wish Google would make another affordable tablet too. Amazon does them, but they're much more like what you'd expect from something cheap - even before considering the restrictive nature of the Amazon Fire OS.

The John Lewis reviews aren't the most reliable as there is only 3 reviews to begin with, one very positive and one is complaining about the first gen yoga. Reviews on every other site looks good. Ive been using the yoga 2 at night when my son is in bed and haven't had any issues. If there was any wifi issues they may have been fixed in the update to lollipop.

Someone will. When EE was offering those free portable batteries to charge phones, a lot of them went straight on eBay for £15 or £20 quid, even though they're technically property of EE. Some were even selling the information on how to get one (fiendishly difficult - you have to send an SMS to a number that was on EE's website)

For about £156, you can get a Linx 1010 tablet, which runs windows 10. Over £170 to include a keyboard. It has a Quad core Intel Atom CPU, 2GB Ram and 32GB storage(expandable with 32gb SD card). The only down sides are the screen resolution, being an IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution, and both front and back cameras are only 2MP. This is probably the tablet I'll think about getting, as others are out of my price range and this will help with my work. I don't see them releasing another Linx tablet, as this was just released back in July.

Win10 tablets will be better for some people - like my mum who only uses her tablet for browsing and email. If you want casual gaming, W10 tablets are fairly lousy compared to Android.

I have never seen such a lazy and misinformed bit of "journalism"! As someone in this technology field for many years I can say it was complete and utter b0llox! It was like suggesting that your car windscreen would crack coz you filled the petrol tank!. Just the sort of dumbed-down, lowest-common-denominator ("Sun -reader") dross that Watchdog specialise in.
Yes, they are fragile touchscreens - they're built to a price so not "bomb-proof" (so take better care, you f'ckwits) but to link charging to touchscreen damage is bloody ridiculous.... <and breathe...>
Touchscreen cost to me is around £30, the LCD is often damaged too by the impact - so another £35 if it is - and it takes me about 40-45 minutes to change one (first one took over an hour). £70 is a bargain!
Tesco are going to sell re branded tablets under the name connect, I have been told.
They've already been selling Connect tablets alongside Hudl tablets for some time now. The connect tablets aren't necessarily rebranded Hudl tablets, as I believe they are Windows 10 tablets, and with much lower specs than the Hudl. I don't see these tablets catching up, to the specs from Hudl 2 any time soon.
