I'm going to make a Battenberg soon, for the first time. Does anyone have any tips, please?

I'm following this recipie;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/battenburg_cake_60878

Also, it's going to be a birthday cake for an older relative. I've exhausted all the usual birthday cakes like madeira, victoria sponge, carrot cake etc. Do you think Battenberg is ok, or is it a bit boring to recieve as a birthday cake?

    I would be well chuffed if someone had taken the trouble to make me a home made Battenberg. Just recently on the Good food channel Rachel Allen made a circular one. Basically she made a couple of 8 inch and then a couple of six inch sponges (a pink and plain in each size) . She cut out six inch circle from the larger ones and dropped in the small one in their place. Hope that makes sense. I cant find a link for that episode-sorry.

    I would be very impressed if someone went to the trouble of making one for me.

    That's a great idea, thanks. A nice twist on it.

    No worries, it gave me the idea at least. A round version will be much easier to make for me.
