We went with Richardsons, setting off from Stalham, great people to book with,
We had no problem at all with the boat but people on the next boat when we moored at Gay staithes had a problem with a blocked toilet , they rand Richardsons and they came out within the hour and fixed it,which was reassuring

Setting off on Tuesday 6th August for a week, we only booked a few days before we set off and paid the full brochure price which was

    £ 947.00 Boat Hire Charge

    £ 150.00 Fuel deposit

    £ 45.00 Collision Damage Waiver

We used £120 worth of diesel so got a £30 refund,so it cost around £1100 all in for 6 people

We had six on board the Astral Gem

    http://www.richardsonsboatingholidays.co.uk/holiday/astral-gem/4/22276666/

From memory the boat hire dropped to £661 in September and down to £414 if booked in October

We had 6 people on board , me and the wife , and our 18 year son and his 18 year old girlfriend and our 12 year old twins and when we book again we will book a 8 to 10 berth with the same people on board to give you added space

We shopped at the large Tesco in Stalham before we set off and shopped again at the large Asda in G Yarmouth, open 24 hours and within walking distance of the moorings, before we crossed Breydon waters and shopped there again on our return to GY

You spend all week whilst cruising, looking at the other boats and noting the seating plans and height etc

Also Ranworth Island was great and Salhouse Broads was nice too

Richardsons is a funny one - people seem to either love 'em or hate 'em!!!

The quality of their boats has improved over the years it's certainly fair to say and they do have a number of newish boats. They used to specialise in buying old boats from other yards and some of their older boats are a bit tatty

We had Major Gem back in 1995 and it was old then!! Broke down twice and we never went back to Richardsons

They are now the biggest yard on the Broads by some distance (also owning Horizon craft in Acle)

I have used them twice and cannot Fault them

I think if you read up on their history

    http://www.richardsonsboatingholidays.co.uk/about/history-of-the-richardson-s-group/42/

The years of decline were when the yard was outside of the family control

I don't have any advise. Just to say that I went on the Broads with my Dad for a week when I was about 11 in the early 80's, and it was a great holiday. I may well be mistaken but I have this vague memory of arriving in a village or town on our travels and all the shops seemed to be owned by/named after one person. As I say I've probably completely mis-remembered it, but I've always wondered if I was right & if so where this place was.

I've got nothing against Richardsons. It was just the wrong boat for us at the time - we were new to boat hire at the time

They cater for a wide audience and budget with everything from small old Hampton Safaris to much bigger modern boats

If i was still hiring motor cruisers I wouldn't be against going with them again in one of their more modern boats but would probably prefer a smaller yard with a more personal service, Of all the yards I think Silverline probably have the best reputation followed probably by Royall, Faircraft and Ferry Marina.I think most of the yards have upped their game now, the days of disasterous yards like Line Azzurro are thankfully gone

Richardson's are building their own boats again now - the Broadsman/Carosel (the same shell, different configuration inside) and the Broadlander.

They've also had a couple of moulds delivered for new boats for next year.

They've just done up one of their older boats into a pirate themed boat aimed at families... Called the Jolly Richie!
    http://www.mustardtv.co.uk/browse/broads-cruiser-becomes-pirate-ship/

It used to be an Astral Gem!

Oh, and we got £50 off this year's holiday as my mum had a photo picked for the 2014 brochure!

Lucky people on this thread. We stayed in a chalet in Horning when the kids were wee. They had their photo taken in the swimming pool for the Brochure. Always wanted to go back but it is fairly expensive.

We had a few days in May and it was our first ever time. We went out of Stalham. First and last night went under Wayford Bridge and went and moored up at Dilham.
    Very relaxing.

I love canoeing on the Dilham canal - so peaceful.

Well we were going to stop at Wayford but went on to Dilham to see what it was like and loved it. Quiet, not too much mooring and a nice pub. What more could you want? :)

I've only been on the canal, didn't know there was a pub! Will have to seek it out next time. The one thing the Broads are good at is pubs.

We moored up right at the end at the free moorings. Walk up the slope and turn left onto the road and it's a five minute walk. I think it's called the Cross Keys.

Thank you. I'll add it to my 'to visit' list! I live in the area and it's always interesting to read what holiday makers think and the places they go to, I'm not sure anyone ever really appreciates the area where they live or use it to it's full potential because people tend to stay in their own little bubble. I only went to Reedham Ferry for the first time last month and have lived within cycling distance for about 10 years!
