So, Johnny Depp was just the same in Ed Wood, Chocolat, Curse of the Black Pearl, Fear and Loathing? Talked and dressed just the same?
he was in some good films 1990-2001 but for the past decade hes been churning out the same quirky character over and over again, and when he does try somthing abit different like public enemies or secret room or the tourist..hes sooo bad.we have seen everything he can do now.no wonder he is talking about quitting, from the first pirates of the caribbean movies onwards he has been awful..i guess there really was a curse of the black pearl.
If I'm honest, I'm slightly confused by this one. Butler has played a huge range of characters throughout his career and I certainly wouldn't say they were all the same.
Sean Connery always plays Sean Connery. Luckily for him, and us, that's largely good enough.
Regards
Mark
A lot of the big stars of yesteryear (before 'naturalistic' acting became popular) were like this. Cary Grant always played Cary Grant (he even joked about it); Clark Gable was always Clark Gable. As I understand it, neither their studios nor the public wanted to see them as anything other than their star images. Ironically, it was actresses who tended to take more daring roles.
< from the first pirates of the caribbean movies onwards he has been awful..i guess there really was a curse of the black pearl.>
Oh I see, the fact that he gets millions per film does not impress you at all, everybody must be idiots. Perhaps you would tell what great acting you have done. Also, explain why they were total wrong to give him a Golden Globe for best actor during the 'awful years'.
Perhaps though you are just being a bit girlie and green with envy.

wow did i touch a nerve? you don't have to agree but i'm entitled to think johnny deep has gone downhill even though i haven't starred in a hollywood blockbuster, he was in some great films in the 90s but he can only play 3 characters (druggie, weird loner, michael jackson) i really don't care about how much any actor got paid or what meaningless awards they have won or how much they have made at the box office, it doesn't alter my perception at all im not a studio executive.i just want to see a good movie which IMO JD hasn't made in a long time. (barring rango)
P.S - sash baron cohen was better in Sweeny todd then johnny depp, but they gave him the award the year before for Borat.
Hugh Grant is the first name which springs to my mind. I'd also say Jennifer Aniston and Jason Statham. It's because of the genre of films they appear in. Things might be different if Jennifer were in an action flick or Jason did a romantic comedy! I was going suggest the same for Hugh if he were cast in a Horror film but he'd probably still manage to play that stuttering Englishman, just with 'frightened' added to that description!
You are kidding! Lets see, Captain Jack Sparrow, JM Barrie, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Ichabod Crane, Ed Wood. Yep they're all the same alright!
...not that I'm picking them because I disapprove; but because they match the topic of the thread;
* Johnny Depp (for reasons already mentioned)
* Jason Statham (usually, if not always the hard man that kicks ass)
* Vin Diesel (there are a few exceptions, but primarily the same as Statham)
* Christian Bale (I find him boring to be honest)
* Robert Downey Jr (always seems to play the sarcastic lead with a bit of an ego complex)
* Christopher Waltz (he's brilliant, but the films I've seen him in, you can connect the characters he's played by the way he speaks and acts)
* Jeremy Renner (same reason as Bale)
* Steven Seagal (just stop making films already)
* Shia LaBeouf (as Bale & Renner)
Sorry but I have to come out of lurking and strongly disagree with this. Yes I know some of his recent stuff has been a bit mainstream and easy, but I've seen The Hurt Locker, The Unusuals and some of his stuff before that like Neo Ned and Dhamer and this man can really act.
Agree with the rest and I would replace him with Brad Pitt
Adam Sandler (although all he ever does is comedies with his friends, it seems)
Jennifer Aniston (although all she ever does is romantic comedies, it seems)
George Clooney (although all he ever does is play the smooth talking, cocky, moderately good looking guy, it seems)
Either your being intentionally literal or you have missed the point of this thread.
Remember, Radcliffe has had several other roles since Harry Potter and while yes, he is a pretty terrible actor and seriously typecast, he doesn't always play the same role.

What same character does he play in every movie?
What about Withnail & I? Brilliant film that features Grant not playing a clean speaking statesman. One of the finest films known to humanity!
Ive only ever seen him in 2 films properly, and he couldnt be playing such different people!
I thought this too. I don't know if I liked Road to Perdition, but it's definitely a dark role for Hanks. G
