Yes but they probably looked great then , I got my first PC in '99 and they looked much better.

Yeah, it's about what I would have expected from that time.
Probably 9600 or 14,400 modems back then. The 28.8K standard was only ratified in 1994 and 56K modems only appeared around 1997.
They've come a long way, though you can still find some ruddy awful ones that haven't been redesigned since the 90's.
I remember a friend showing me Mosaic in around 1993 after he installed it on his PC (I also had a PC but didn't have a modem). My first reaction was "what's the point?". He still reminds me about that 20 years later.
