Radio 2 Xmas Overkill

At the risk of being called Scrooge etc does anyone else think Radio 2 have gone overboard with the Xmas songs a little too early? On the Evans show it seemed every song was seasonal. When Ken Bruce came on 4 out of the first 5 were Xmas songs. At that point we switched off in the office.

I'd expect every 3rd or 4th song to be a Xmas song but it's just total overkill in my opinion.

Roll on bloody Boxing Day.

I heard an excruciating song at 10.40, Frank Kelly off Father Ted doing some spoken word version of Twelve Days of Christmas. Truly dreadful.

Radio 2 are right on trend with the early Christmas. For most people Christmas Day is the last Christmas dinner or Christmas party they go to, having already had the works do, the school do, the scouts do, the gym do, the church do, the book club do etc etc etc. We've joined in in this year, all our parties are before Christmas with our last one on the 25th: at COP on the 27th, Christmas will be boxed up and put away, along with Blue Christmas, Silent Night Blues and all the other festive favourites. :)

I think you perhaps overestimate the amount of parties the average person goes to!

I will be the first to admit I hate Xmas, don't do cards, presents etc, my only concession to the whole thing is going out to lunch on Xmas day. Having said that, even my Xmas loving colleagues turned off Radio 2 in disgust today. I can live with a few songs per hour but they have gone totally overboard.

I guess I am in a small minority though. No more radio for me till 26/12 then.

These songs get played for two weeks out of 52. Lighten up people, it's Christmas.

Ken did say that it's only played once a year. I haven't heard it for a couple of years til today. Sarah Kenbedy used to play it. Normality will return sooner than we think.

I'm convinced all this media hype around Christmas makes anyone who is alone/away from family at this time of year feel fifty times worse.

It really should be reined in a bit......

I hate Christmas, always have. However last year my elderly mum said "we've all made it through to another Christmas" and that really made me think. I still hate the commercialism and false 'fun' but this year I will be celebrating that, for this year at least, we're still all here again.

Ken Bruce plays that every year. Sarah Kennedy used to play it as well

We're on party six this weekend. (I have a fab miss santa suit), I think there's room for a few more Christmas tunes on 2, just this morning on the breakfast show, they played Christmas tunes for the first 15 minutes...fab, I was all falalalalaaaaa la la la laaaaaaa and moon walking across the kitchen while making breakfast and then they popped in My Best Friend's Girl by The Cars...that was like the lights coming on at the end of the school disco...what were they thinking!? I buttered the toast. Christmas should be more like football, every week! Why can't we be happy and jolly, and nice to each other all the time? The chocolate might become a bit of problem. :)
    Making breakfast.... :)

Two weeks doesn't seem that early these days. Some of the supermarkets seem to have been obsessed with Christmas since about September.

If you can come round my house dressed like that even I might start to enjoy Xmas:D

Yeah, the tunes weren't quite so numerous today, 1 week before the 25th now I ill forgive them if they ramp it up again tomorrow.

(just don't play that appalling Leona Lewis tune though.):D

I've been working from home the last week and rarely listen to R2 these days so I've yet to hear my first pop Christmas song - at least via the radio.

My ultimate experience happened a couple of years ago. Having not heard a Christmas song that season I made a visit to my dentist. He often plays a radio and as the needle went in that awful dirge "Fairy tale of New York" started up...

(I reported the practice to the PRS.)

You're spot on there, I know there are lots of people who don't care for this time of year and they each have their own reasons. Similarly many folks don't like Christmas songs but I find the outrage and indignation some vent on forums like this just get a bit dramatic.

It's easy enough to avoid the radio if they're playing songs you don't like and that's by not listening. I agree if you are in a situation where you can't, in a workplace for example, then I guess the only option is to suck it up for a few days. They'll be gone by a week tomorrow and the you'll be rid of them for 50 weeks.

I sometimes feel if I got as upset about trivial things like some do on here I'd be too stressed to leave the house.

I understand that some might find Christmas a bit too much and if you are in jobs that are not too pleasant and have bosses that are not too fun loving then of course you might not enjoy Christmas and the parties, then again if that is the situation then having the radio on and enjoying the Christmas songs might make you feel a bit happier and help your day go by quicker.

Really Christmas lasts for 12 days and should finish on January 6th but as soon as Christmas Day has gone there are no Christmas songs on the radio, also it is as good as back to normal starting the first weekend in January.

Think yourself lucky, at work radios have Smooth, Heart and Absolute 80's they have been ramping up Christmas tunes since Dec 1st.

Also Radio 2 were playing Christmas tunes last week...well Chris Evans was. Ken seemed to be Christmas free.

Fairytale of New York hasn't been played much. Too much Jona Lewie and Chris De Burgh for my liking. Vanessa played Mary's Boy Child by Harry Belafonte today which I like and I'm still waiting to hear the Gilbert O'Sullivan one!

I like the Leona one too, I think it will become a classic.(played every year for evermore) There really are very few Christmas tunes that stand the test of time, which is why we are where we are music-wise at this time of year. I used to be a bit of a Christmas grump but life's too short, so now I get really into it. :) pop on a red suit, pop on Radio 2, pop on a smile and before you know it, Christmas will be over and Jezza will be asking the annual questions: are your snowdrops and daffodils up yet? Do they get earlier every year?

On Alex's Show this morning, it was very festive, simply by adding falalalala la la la laaaaa to anything , it becomes instantly festive. That's what I do.
Oh btw...our snowdrops are up...this pic taken 5 mins ago,.falalalala la la la laaaaa..festive snowdrops. :) a while to go before they flower though. :)
