Do I have to use Humax brand wifi dongle with Fox T2?

Hi,

Do I have to use the Humax branded wifi dongle with a Humax Fox T2 or can I use a different brand?

I am just wondering if the dongle has some special encryption or coding so you are tied into the brand.

If I can use a different brand, what are the parameters I need to look for?

Thanks
Jason

    No.

Yes, but Humax set top boxes don’t have a driver for every chipset that wifi dongles can use. The Humax dongle has a Ralink RT3070 chipset.
    See http://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/FAQs#Which_WiFi_Dongle.3F
There is a very long thread on the subject http://hummy.tv/forum/threads/hdr-fox-t2-wireless-dongle.127/

Occasionally there is a report of a dongle with the Ralink RT3070 chipset not working when all the little quirks that the Humax expects with the security used (i.e. single protocol) and the simplicity of the password having been satisfied (i.e.. no spaces or special characters).

Ralink RT3070 chipset and costing £15 or less, and a bit of luck that you don't get one of the odd ones that don't work. Someone has managed to update one of those so it does work. Unfortunately I can't remember where about in Hummy.tv that the techy solution was mentioned.

If a recent review of the dongle being sold mentions a Humax working then that’s a good sign.
A review on Amazon for the Tenda W311U+ mentions a Humax being OK, but that was a year ago and things may have changed.

You'd probably be better off getting a couple of Homeplug adapters than relying on wireless.
