Lower back pain and urge to urinate
oooh health issue...
I have chronic lower back pain, it's to the lower left hand side about the top of the hip bone at the back and it's goes sometimes into my left leg, making it often painful to put any weight on it. I also have this urge to pee....but can't and twice I've struggled out of bed into the bathroom only to be standing there for ten mintues and nothing to happen.
Any ideas? I'm going to see doctor on Monday, natrally, but I just wanted to know if any of you guys recognised the symptoms or anything.

Could also be a trapped nerve of course, fingers crossed and good luck - do let us know how you get on x .
Sounds exactly like pyelytis. No home remedies available.
I'll go to the doctors tomorrow but it's just annoying me now.
It could be sciatica which is a lower back problem that also affects the leg. Do you have any pain in your left foot too?
No,no pain there thankfully.
Definatley get yourself to the doctors tomorrow hunny.
Look after yourself.
...and he never hardly made eye contact and after a 30 second "consultation" gave me a prescription for some co-codamol tablets.
I'll see how I get on with them but I'd have liked the Doc to take more interest than sit the otherside of the desk and barely look at me.
Had exactly the same thing happen to me and I changed my doctor, 1st 1 said "you just have to live with it" then the second 1 put me on the Co-codamol (horrible things), im now being seen by physio and a specialist for a slipped disk and might have to have an op, id hassle them about it until they do somthing.
It seems to be related, it was 1 of the 1st things my physio asked me.
Some GPs are to put it bluntly, shit. Be wary of taking too many co codamol. They can make you terribly constipated.
Perhaps it is the other way around? That the pain is so strong that it stopped them being able to relax enough to pee, unless they are bursting to go?
As well as that, I'd also back up the previous post about co-codamol being quite a nasty painkiller to take. Avoid taking too much for too long and drink plenty of water.
If you have problems with your back caused through prolapsed discs or compression of the spinal chord or nerve roots that in turn can lead to problems with the bladder and bowel.
It was one of the first questions I was asked when my back problems were being assessed.
Do you have an NHS walk in centre near home or work - often useful for getting a free second opinion from another doctor. I usually just turn up and get seen within 45 minutes - worth it if you are worried.

I'd go back and see a different doc - assuming there's another one in the practice. If not, go back to the same one and be very firm with them that you want to know what the problem is and could it be something that needs further investigation.
I am waiting on a physio appt for a bad back too and it isn't much fun (the waiting AND the bad back). So the sooner you go back, the sooner you can be referred to the correct person. Good luck!
