For the second year running, Richard Keys and Andy Gray are broadcasting their talkSPORT mid-morning show from the Cheltenham Festival.

They are joined by Rupert Bell and Paddy Power, who are commentating on each day's feature race (today's Champion Hurdle, tomorrow's Queen Mother Champion Chase, Thursday's World Hurdle and Friday's Cheltenham Gold Cup) and updating the rest during Hawksbee & Jacobs' afternoon show. Matt Smith (talkSPORT's OB manager) and Jon Norman (the usual producer of Keys & Gray) are producing the station's coverage from Cheltenham Racecourse this week.

5 Live Sports Extra's section of the Five Live website has been updated to suggest that there won't be commentary on the Elite League Ice Hockey 1st V 2nd weekend between the Belfast Giants and Sheffield Steelers on Saturday.

Would commentary have come from BBC Radio Ulster, or like what happened when Great Britain were close to gaining promotion to the Ice Hockey World Championship Top Division in Poland a few years back, they used those from BBC Coventry & Warwickshire?

Seth Bennett said on twitter or facebook or somewhere that they were taking Radio Sheffield's commentary:

Great news that @BBC5LSX are taking @BBCSheffield's coverage of Saturday's #Belfast v #sheffield game live...big step for the sport... #eihl

    He also said this:

@BBC5LSX: Baseball fans, there will be a new weekly show on Sports Extra; Thursday Night Baseball from April. #bbcsport”great news

Thanks for alerting me to this. I think its slightly bittersweet news in a way - while I'm obviously very happy that Radio 5 Live Sports Extra's baseball coverage will be continuing, I'll miss their live coverage of Sunday evening games. This doesn't come as a surprise though - a few months back on the MLB on 5 Live Facebook group, Simon Crosse from USP Content (producers of their coverage) posed the question about whether people would be in favour of moving the show to a Thursday night.

While Sunday night is baseball night for those of us who got our first taste of the sport through MLB on Five, I can understand the logic of this move - there are often a fair few MLB games played in reasonable PM timeslots on most Thursdays during the season, and with Thursday normally being a blank night as far as UK sport is concerned, there clearly won't be nearly as many clashes with coverage of other sports that has affected MLB on 5 Live over the past two years. But although it makes sense and I'll be happy to listen on Thursdays, while not complaining I must admit I'm a touch sad to see the end of their Sunday night coverage.

But of course the main thing is that 5 Live Sports Extra's baseball coverage is continuing in 2012, which I think we are lucky to see given the much documented BBC cuts. And what a way for them to kick things off by taking commentary on the first two games of the regular season from the Tokyo Dome! :D

Wednesday 28th March - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and the BBC Sport website

Sports Extra Baseball with Simon Brotherton from the Tokyo Dome

Baseball: MLB Opening Series Japan, Game One
Seattle Mariners @ Oakland Athletics - Simon Brotherton and Josh Chetwynd (commentary), with Phil Spooner producing

The broadcast began on the BBC Sport website at 11am BST, about ten minutes before first pitch, with 5 Live Sports Extra joining the game after TMS at around 12.45pm during the bottom of the sixth inning. Simon also did a pre-game preview during the lunch interval in the cricket and reported into Radio 5 Live's 12.30pm sports news bulletins, while Josh interviewed A's general manager Billy Beane, the inspiration for the film Moneyball, for the programme before they went on-air.

For anyone wondering why the BBC have sent Simon over to Japan to cover this game on-site rather than just taking a local US radio commentary as they usually would do: he will be covering the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne, Australia for BBC Radio next week so he will have been in that part of the world anyway. They'll be taking US commentary feeds once their coverage from North America gets underway with Nat Coombs and Josh Chetwynd returning as their presenting team. Contrary to some listings, they're only doing commentary on today's first game of the two game MLB Opening Series at the Tokyo Dome.

Some more information about this season's plans for Sports Extra Baseball: their new regular timeslot will be 6pm our time on Thursdays, starting with the Boston Red Sox @ Detroit Tigers on opening day in North America next week, with there usually being at least two or three MLB games taking place at that time. However they'll still be doing a selection of Sunday evening games when the 5 Live Sports Extra schedule allows it, so it'll be the best of both worlds really. They'll be broadcasting 50 games this year including the All-Star Game in July and they'll be doing on-site commentary on the World Series in October as they did last year.

Monday 26th to Thursday 29th March - BBC Radio 4 LW and BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

    Test Match Special

Cricket: Sri Lanka v England, First Test Match, Galle International Stadium

Commentators: Jonathan Agnew, Simon Mann and Roshan Abeysinghe
Summarisers: Michael Vaughan, Geoff Boycott and Vic Marks

    Reporters elsewhere:

BBC Radio 5 Live - Kevin Howells and Simon Mann
    talkSPORT - Jack Bannister

Seeing as Kevin Howells was out in Sri Lanka reporting for TMS and Radio 5 Live, who was on reserve commentary duty back in the UK? Given the problems 5LSE had with connecting to their line in Bilbao when doing commentary on Athletic Club v Manchester United in the Europa League football a few weeks ago, I doubt they'd have opted against employing a reserve commentator. Indeed has one been needed at any point in the match?

Something that was mentioned by Aggers while I was listening to the test match: Radio 5 Live Sports Extra are planning to broadcast much more live country cricket action this year than have done in previous summers. By the sounds of it, they will be taking commentaries from BBC Local Radio and the BBC Sport website and putting them straight onto 5LSE. This is something that 5LSE has done in order to carry bonus commentaries on occasional Football League and FA Cup football matches which I feel has worked well, so I am looking forward to this policy being employed for county cricket on hopefully more of a regular basis. It certainly is a good way of justifying the expenditure required to do county cricket commentaries (which were threatened by the BBC budget review last year) and will give an opportunity for many talented BBC Local Radio commentators to broadcast to a national audience.

Here's a bit of a talkSPORT news round-up when it comes to their coverage of all sports other than football.

Tomorrow morning, for the first time in the station's history, talkSPORT will begin broadcasting sports content 24 hours a day with a new sports-based overnight show being introduced into the last part of their schedule to still include non-sports output.

The new show will be called Extra Time and it will be presented by Mike Graham (on Tuesday to Friday mornings), Matt Forde (Saturdays) and Mike Bovill (Sundays and Mondays), going out between 1-6am Tue-Sat with the Bovill-fronted shows having an extra hour from midnight. Synopsises of the programme on the talkSPORT website read as follows: "Mike Graham hosts the fastest sports show on the dial featuring reaction to the sport at home and abroad" and "from NFL to NBA, from America to Australia, talkSPORT goes global to bring you the best of the action from every corner of the planet".

With Mike Bovill becoming one of the presenters of the new Extra Time show, this meant that talkSPORT required a new host for their weekly Sunday night rugby union show Full Contact. This will be the station's England team reporter and afternoon sports newsreader Andrew McKenna, who has covered for Bovill on quite a few occasions and will take up the mantle full-time next weekend. Bovill hosted his final Full Contact alongside Jeff Probyn last night, after nearly two years at the helm.

Finally, talkSPORT will be exclusively broadcasting the draw for the 2012 World Snooker Championship two weeks today. It will be made on the Hawksbee & Jacobs show at 1.30pm on Monday 16th April with Barry Hearn and Judd Trump joining Paul and Andy to give their reaction to the draw.

    Baseball: American League
Boston Red Sox @ Detroit Tigers - Dan Dickerson and Jim Price (commentary provided by Talk Radio 1270AM WXYT - "the Detroit Tigers Radio Network")

In the United States, ESPN Radio broadcast Major League Baseball's Opening Night game on Wednesday (4th April), St. Louis Cardinals @ Miami Marlins, with commentary from Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton. Coverage was streamed on the ESPN Radio website and was not geoblocked internationally.

As was the case in 2011, Jon and Chris will be ESPN Radio's announcers for their coverage of a Saturday Game of the Week and Sunday Night Baseball as well as the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game in July. A list of their scheduled commentaries for the first half of the season can be found here.
