Did you get married in Thailand?

A friend of mine is getting married soon and when I pointed out that a few years ago he and his then girlfriend (English) were married in Thailand he said that it wasn't legal in England because the marriage was not registered here. I have my doubts about this and would welcome any information on the subject.

The marriage will only be recognised under UK law if it is valid under Thai law. For it to be valid in Thai law, the marriage must be registered with the Registrar at an Amphur office (District Office). A religious ceremony on its own is not recognised as being valid under Thai law. In Thailand, wedding ceremonies/parties can be held separately from the marriage registration.

Maybe they just want a second uk based ceremony? Does it matter?
