Having never read the book I try not to use this expression, but plenty of people do use it, most of whom I'd wager have never read the book - or even know it's a book! (Most recently heard, Ally McCoist on A Question of Sport.)
Do you use this expression and if so, is it because you've read the book or merely because everyone else seems to say it?
yes I use it. No I haven't read the book. The reason I use it is because it is universally known and is very useful.
Are you really not using the xpression on purpose solely because you haven't read the book?
Are there any other expressions that equate to nails on a blackboard for you?
I wonder how many BB fans don't know where "Big Brother" comes from?
Quite a lot of them I think.
There was a thread about it some months ago and loads of them had never even heard of George Orwell - let alone read "1984"!
I've read the book and loved it. Yossarian lives!:D
As for annoying phrases, I can't stand it when people say 'it's political correctness gone mad.' The fact that I'm not allowed to punch them in the face, now that's political correctness gone mad!:D;)

That's one I can't stand.
Ahhhhh!!!!!
I don't mind the saying, but when it is used, it never seems to actually be a "catch 22" situation.
Which one ? Monday ? Tuesday ?
Doris?
I think Billy Connolly once done a live skit about that saying, but I can't find any info.

Not really.

..... and then the person goes and gives you the opposite point of view!
I can't stand that one but luckily the expression is dying out now.
I think that's the idea isn't it? Having said that, let me say this....
'plenty more fish in the sea'
amongst many.
the book is one of the funniest books I have ever read.
Rarely do I read something funny like that and think - mmm I couldn't have written that
It's just so different - well for the time it was.
Especially when it's used as an agreement:
- My word! That young lady over there has the most enormous bristols!
- D'ya know what I mean?
Muppets!
When people write about a hot favourite as being a shoe-in. When it is actually shoo-in.
"I was washing my dog, like you do...and..."
Grrr!
Presumably, the answer is "Whatever what?"
I feel your pain - it drives me demented .
My other personal horror is:
"I/he/she/we/they/ turned round and said..." AAAAAAGGGGGHHHH!!!
I get the 'out of order' bit.
But what is the 'Bang' bit all about?
