I saw it as more of a calculated move. He's been quite quiet and boring up until now and wondered aloud if the public liked him.
Sensing they might not, I think he's seizing on the opportunity to become more popular by aligning himself with the viewers (after hearing the "Get Perez out!" chants) by shooting his mouth off.

Couldn't agree more with all of you, on every one of your points. I didn't mind him until this weekend but that was some blatant vote-winning stuff.
I find the way he sidles up to people and then his behaviour tonight a bit weak and a bit creepy.
