    Oh no :(

It's a good sign he didn't just start shooting, at least they are still alive and there's a chance they will get out.

They did have a remote controlled camera focused from the studios onto the front of the shop itself but they've been ordered to cut the shot by police.

I hope the hostages will be okay, so unfair that their normal everyday is ruined by some extreme lunatic. This terrorizing of regular citizens needs to stop and if the groups in question continue then they should be warned that if it continues there will be severe consequences.

That's not being fair to the majority of Muslims who don't do bad stuff.

I put it to you that the real issue is that Western governments continue to pussyfoot around and don't act nearly firmly enough against that minority of extremists and hate preachers within their own midst.

They keep cutting away from the live scene. UK news would never do that.

Seems a slightly odd target for global terrorism.
Is this person proposing to enforce decaffinated beverages?

edit: Oz news now confirmed 13 customers and staff in the shop. Flag was put on display, previously thought to be ISIS, but now confirmed not to be but written in Arabic.

Or maybe the guy's waiting for enough cameras to arrive on the scene before he starts executing the hostages.

Apparently it's the Lindt chocolate cafe which they have occupied.

It is in the centre of the financial district (apparently) and comes after arrests this morning over terrorism charges. It's possibly not a long thought out plan but a spur of the moment reaction.

They would if they were told to do so by the police.

This report from the Guardian live page is interesting:
My colleague Calla Wahlquist is at Martin Place, where a cafe is under siege in Sydney with a flag with Arabic writing has been hung in the window. She says a man who appears to be a priest has been escorted into the building.

It's an easy undefended target - and it's paralysed the Central business district in Sydney. They aren't going to attack government buildings - too risky,

Could be aimed at the Swiss Government, then?
