I can now pick this up loud and clear on 107.6 in Millbrook in Southampton. Has the strength on FM been upped so more people can get the station or something?

Quite possibly. Juice and Galaxy up here have both had power increases.

It was always a Bournemouth & Poole station, but this year it went onto the South Hampshire DAB multiplex meaning everyone in South Hampshire should be able to get it. I don't actually have a DAB radio.

I suspect they have had a power increase on FM so people without DAB in its (new) DAB broadcast areas can get it :)

I can pick it up on my DAB radio in Gosport.

Yeah, I get that with quite a few stations. It might be because I'm a Mac user. I have trouble with thebayradio.com "listen now" button too.

    Try radiofeeds.co.uk.

It'll hook you up to pretty much anything.

It puts the link into iTunes for me so I just select my stations from that when I'm at home or the office.

This sounds exciting, i'll try tuning in to it tonight and see how we go.

I'll try it in both Shirley (at my mum's) and Woolston (at my house) and let you know how far it seems to travel

It could be that there is a lift on some of the FM stations at the moment because of the foggy weather, I have had this happen in the past. After the fog clears it will all go back to normal.

Fire had a power increase a couple of years ago but it's very directional towards Bounemouth and Poole only.

With the move to DAB Fire definitely has ambitions beyond Bournemouth and Poole.

But I can't see daytime being relevant to listeners outside the conurbation.

However, the evening specialists deserve a wider airing.

I drove back from Milford-on-sea last night with Fire playing all the way back to Woolston. It was listenable but without RDS, and a bit of fizz here and there!

It would make a great alternative to Capital if they do decide to push their broadcast our way!

Yep I expect this was a bit of atmospherics,

I'd be surprised if 107.6 was ever going to be improved any more in the Southampton direction, it would likely cause interference to Kestrel FM. I think it would need to find a new frequency, which I think is unlikely.

It's more likely that 107.6 would get absorbed into 103.2 Capital FM as the formats are similar.

I done a Band Scan on my PL 600 today at Portsmouth down the beach and was very surprised to pick them up here.

Also tried on the car radio but this just had splatter from another station.

It might be that you are listening to an actual fire.

Maybe they have got the Total Star engineer to "fix" the transmitter :D

Kestrel 107.6 FM is only in the Basingstoke and surrounding area which is some 30 miles away from Southampton.

Kestrel 101.6/102 FM is further down in the Alton and surrounding area, a frequency nowhere near 107.6 FM

Quite. Basingstoke and Bournemouth are almost 60 miles apart. Even Fire only has 1kW to play with these days, and Kestrel far less, on any of its transmitters. I imagine (without looking up Ofcom's TX parameters) that Kestrel are using no more than 200W on 107.6.

Considering the fact that most FM stuff from Chillterton Down or Rowridge (Which are much closer, and, with the exception of IoW Radio, much more powerful) struggle to get as far as Basingstoke.

Don't see how Fire could be a problem as I imagine their site isn't as high, and, being nearly twice the distance, presumably has more hills in the way.
