How do I get my umbilical hernia (newly diagnosed) to pop back in?

Hi there, hope someone can give me some useful advice!
I went to the GP's this morning, as I have just recently started to have a problem which causes a lump a little smaller than a golf-ball to "pop out" from just above my belly-button, causing me great pain, then later "pop back in" again, relieving the pain.
When I arrived at the GP's, it had popped out, and was therefore very painful. However, during the long wait to see the doctor, it popped back in again, and the pain went. But during my consulation, the GP got me to move my legs in a certain way (I had to lie down and lift them both up at once) that caused the lump to pop back out yet again, so that he could feel it. Equallying yet more pain.
I left the surgery without remembering to ask him how to make it pop in again! And so I am sitting here in a great deal of pain once more. I phoned the surgery to ask his advice, and the receptionist has just got back to me, saying that it should pop back in of its own accord, but if it doesn't, I should go to the hospital. Advice which I shall take, if necessary.
However, I wondered if anyone here unfortunate enough to have a hernia like mine has any tips on how to pop it back in myself, therefore bypassing the need to go to the hospital. If you have any ideas, I'll be v grateful. I'm inclined to just try to shove it back in, but don't want to do it more harm than good.
Also, the GP is referring me to a specialist to discuss whether I need an operation for it. The problem is, I also have the much more serious condition of Heart Failure, and have been warned I must avoid general anaesthetics whenever possible. Does anyone know if it's possible to have a hernia op done under a local, or epidural, or whatever?
Am about to go to an appointment with my Heart Failure nurse. Honestly, it never rains but it pours!!!!
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had one after pregnancy and it was horrid, the most painful thing was pushing a shopping trolly!
I struggled for a while, but in the end went for surgery - best thing I did. felt instantly better! I still have to be careful when lifting as it may reoccur, but I life 50lbs + at work and have had no issues with it, just make sure you lift correctly.
edit: just seen your bit about the heart issue. I had mine under general, but I don't see why it couldn't be local, it was a twenty min op.

Aw, Uffa, that's so nice of you (and the other people who've mentioned me) I'm really touched by it. There are some nice people on here, aren't there? Will have a look at the other thread and give a quick update on it.
