Euro 2016 Qualifiers

France will qualify automatically as hosts, which leaves 52 countries chasing 23 places in Euro 2012.

The simplest way would be to have 7 groups of 6 teams and 2 groups of 5 teams. Top 2 in each group plus best 5 3rd place teams go through to Euro 2016.

Anyone got any different suggestions?

I would like to see more but smaller groups which would result in fewer matches and less disruption to the domestic calendar. Players, clubs and FAs tend to whinge about "too many games".

Something like 12 groups of 4 or 5, with the top 2 qualifying and a single elimination game between two teams to get the 24 down to 23. This would mean we need just 6 or 8 qualifying games, not 12 for a 7 team group.

However with so many teams in the finals, it makes qualification a bit of a mockery given of the 52 teams, about a dozen have no chance of qualification whatsoever (San Marino, Andorra, Scotland :), Faeroe Islands) - in reality there will be less than 40 teams chasing the 23 places, which is more reason for reducing the long drawn out qualification process.

How about the weakest teams having to play a pre-qualifying group with the winners qualifying for the main qualifying round.

It would allow teams such as San Marino and the Faroe Islands to play against teams of a similar level and maybe actually win a few games rather than losing every game by wide margins.

It should just be the same as the qualification for Euro 2012 but with all the lines moved down a spot.

The bottom 10 ranked countries in UEFA are:

Luxembourg, Faroe Islands, Cyprus, Iceland, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Malta, Liechtenstein, Andorra, San Marino

Id say its a safe bet that none of them will qualify so that leaves 42 teams fighting for 23 places

In fact id be hard pushed to see the next 10 quailfying either although im surprised to see Bulgaria down there

Finland, Latvia, Albania, Israel, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Georgia, FYR Macedonia, Northern Ireland, Azerbaijan

so that could well be 32 teams realistically fighting for 23 places.

they do this in the asian tournament. The really small countries play a group then go into a middle round where most of the other countries enter than there is the final round where the top 3 or 4 teams enter.

Dont see why UEFA couldnt introduce a pre qualfying round for the bottom 10 or 15 ranked teams

    9 groups:

    7 groups of 6, plus 2 groups of 5

Top 2 from each go through, plus the best "3rd placed" team, total=19 qualifiers

The other 8 "3rd placed" teams have a 2-leg play off, producing 4 more qualifiers.

Total = 23 qualifiers joining France

I think the reason they don't have pre-qualifying is that the likes of Andorra, San Marino, Scotland :) and Liechtenstein rely on the once a year visit - including flogging the telly rights - of the likes of Italy and Spain to as their prime source of income.

Rep of Ireland win 2-1 in Georgia with two great goals from Aidan McGeady (one of them a late winner)......a fairly scrappy performance though.

The crowd for Greece V Romania is looking rather sparse. Don't think there's any fans there! (Unless there's a reason)

It was only 1-0 at half time, so looked like they were going to get a decent result.

Northern Ireland won in Hungary so good start for them.

First away win for Northern Ireland in four years so well done to them.

The Republic always seem to start their qualifying campaign with an away win having beaten Armenia away in the opener in 2010 and Kazakhstan in 2012.
