My first intro to the worldwide web was in summer 1997 and I "askjeeves" about baby furniture (6 months pregnant with first)
What was the first thing you did and when?

Microsoft Chat. I was usually that alien with lots of eyes. Fun and exciting times to be able to chat to people all over the world.

I think the first thing I did was look at the official Doctor Who site in 2005.

Me too. Actually, I say X-Files when what I really mean is Gillian Anderson. I think it was Lycos or something like that.

Sent an email to my friend who had also just connected. Them we 'chatted' in a chat room despite living a few doors away from each other.
Think this was in 1995 or 1996.

I was shown a search engine with a few links on which linked to another page which went around in circles linking to the other pages with not much content in 1995. It was pretty dull back then.

Bought my first item a book from amazon USA in 1998 and never looked back.

I was used to the Janet ethernet from 1991, mostly chatting to students in other Universities when I should have been studying.

Had to remember a 23 digit code just to log in.

Also emailed and used a chat system which was addictive.

Wait an eternity for dial up to connect then reconnect when it disconnected. Those were the days going on line waiting seemingly forever with my iMac making r2-d2 noises. I can't remember what I used it for initially didn't know about adult things as a young teen until much later.

Probably around 1994 or 95 using the school's 14k modem to search for info on our history coursework.

When I started call in 1992 I distinctly remember our clait teacher telling us that the internet would never really catch on:D

At least she knew what it was unlike these presenters including Katie Couric who were baffled by it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAV2Gjkhztg

I remember us getting it at work in possibly 1994 (and our own PCs instead of Unix workstations).
A knowledgeable 22 year old colleague showed us mid-20s oldies Internet Explorer, Alta Vista and Minesweeper/Solitaire.
He also let us use his CD of Doom for install (we didn't have security policies for some years)

Although I remember the day vividly I don't remember any sites at all. Possibly BBC News?
Internet content was minimal. We played games. Maybe we found a download site.

Again, early '90s. I was going to visit a friend in Bonn and did an Altavista search for the tube map of the area. Was amazed to actually find it. Would not be a surprise these days - you can find almost anything!

Think, Can't think of a think, Unthink.

In other words how on earth do you expect me to remember that far back? We are looking at 20 odd years ago. All I remember is waiting for the thing to connect.
I also remember the complaints from people when they have been trying to phone me for a hour and not being able to. How things have changed.

    Agreed.

Thinking about it, I probably used the internet before 2005. 2005 seems a bit late. But it's impossible to remember when you first used it and what the first thing was you did. For me, it could have been doing something in ICT at primary school.
