    I disagree. His character is fundamentally unsuited to not being physically intimidating, and through his 50s and slowly heading towards 60 this is increasingly becoming the case. Christian could clearly have battered him, had it not been for Phil being a psycho and reaching for a weapon.

    Also, Derek was a much darker personality than Phil, and both Pat's initial response to him and some of his scenes (such as with David and the knife, and his exit last week) really reflect that. Phil's quite a complex character and has a softness to him (there are significant elements of pathos with Phil, whereas Grant was always much more 2D) but Derek, for all his talk of family and loyalty, was clearly damaged beyond repair.

    They've definitely wasted an opportunity there, and by killing him off there's no way back.
