We may still be a couple of weeks away from the beginning of a new actual year, but we're right on the threshold of beginning a new darting year - so it's time to open up a new thread to cover the thrills and spills in the world of PDC darts in 2013!

However, this year's World Championship is tinged with sadness as it's the first one to be staged since the sad loss of the voice of the sport, Sid Waddell - and that's been recognised by the creation of a new World Championship trophy bearing his signature and his name.

I imagine that the PDC will be paying a tribute to Sid on-stage tonight in the same way as they did to Jocky Wilson earlier this year in the Premier League, and I don't know about you, but I'll be trying to preface tonight's action by watching the touching tribute to and interview with Sid that Sky screened just after his passing in August.

Hopefully the events of the next fortnight, culminating in the crowning of the 2013 PDC World Darts champion, will serve to make him and all darts fans proud of the sport they love.

So, as we prepare to witness the new World Championship and the new darting year beginning tonight at 7pm, what else is there to say but...

Game On!

If the first round goes to script there could be tasty second round & last 16 matches as Nicholson could play Thornton in round 2 with a possible last 16 match against Phil Taylor.

Worst night in the world to go out.....not the weather I don't mean (!) but for the likes of Lewis and particularly Nicho.....to be out of the tournament while people are still metaphorically taking their seats and then not be involved for the next fortnight plus.....bet anyone with half-genuine aspirations of winning the title would settle for playing their opener any night but..........

So like most other sports then :p

You also forgot to mention that it's Bruce Spendley's bow out.

Is that guy with the weird throwing style in the world's this year, can't remember his name but the way he threw looked like he was an archer?

You're right to identify Nicholson as the seed most at threat tonight, as the match against Stompe is the kind of match he's been regularly losing throughout the last year when his ability should've ensured a comfortable victory.

I personally think this tournament is a make-or-break one for The Asset following the dreadful run he's been on; if he exits before the quarter-final stage, it could easily see him dropping out of the higher reaches of the PDC.

You wouldn't think Thornton would be unduly troubled against Magnus Caris - who I hope gets better treatment from the Ally Pally crowd tonight than he did a year ago -and likewise Lewis against Gino Vos even though he's coming into this championship in poorer form than he did last year.

Then again, we were probably saying the same thing this time last year before Lewis needed a tie break to beat Ian White - and although I know nothing about Vos, he's probably the kind of lesser known player that Lewis has struggled against over the years.

Is it? I didn't know that.

It's a shame as he's been a stalwart of not just the PDC/WDC since its inception but darts as a whole for the best part of thirty years, seemingly - but I guess it was a matter of time as he did seem to be making more and more mistakes as the years went by.

Stompe is in awful form himself so I don't see The Asset having too many problems.

Been rationing my darts over the last few months but as ever can't wait for this to get going.

Arena looking rather empty, it must be said.

Taking time for people to come in?

Interesting how Caris is being blamed for what happened with the crowd last year...

Good to see that the walk-on girls have a bit more class to them than the bimbos who led the players out early on last year.
