Saw the film earlier and thought it was ok, nothing special but at the same time not completely unwatchable. Not many sex scenes in it and even the ones shown aren't allthat special. I give great credit to Jamie Dornan he plays the part well. As a reader of the book id say they've done a pretty decent job of getting the story on screen. The book is very limited in the phrases and descriptions so repeats itself a lot wheras that don't happen in the film.

The funniest part for me was the ending. The film ended as the book ended, yet the audience were in shock that it was left like that...I told my fella that if they'd read the book they'd have known the ending of the film!

I agree with you. The ending was a little abrupt I think, I have read the book and knew it was coming, but it did go down a little differently then in the book.

I was in the cinema today. I saw big crowds either waiting for films
(Big Hero 6, The Wedding Ringer) or coming out of them (Selma ,
    Kingsman:The Secret Service).

However, the big draw was the Fifty Shades movie-there were
about 30 people waiting in the queue to see it, and the the cinema had
a "Sorry-9.45 screening of 50SOE sold out" sign.

Aussie TV presenter Lisa Wilkinson admits "50 Shades of Grey" into the hallowed
company of "Reefer Madness", "Sex Lives of the Potato Men",
"Houseboat Horror", and "Battlefield Earth" :
'Fifty Shades of Grey' is quite simply the worst movie I have ever seen.”

The news anchor gave the movie just 1 out of 5 stars, slamming both main characters and the movie itself for the message it sends.

"Fifty Shades of Grey is more appalling than appealing," she said. "It's domestic violence dressed up as erotica."

I thought this might be of interest to people here: Natalie Collins on Newsnight,
explaining why she believes the whole 50SOE franchise is harmful to people:

Interesting discussion. Does 50 Shades normalise deviant behaviour seems to be the question? Examples were given of the whole pop cultural phenomenon of 50 shades which might be compared to something like Star Wars or Twilight.

Do people copy what they see in film or read in books? Watching Nightmare on Elm Street or Saw doesn't turn viewers into serial killers, does it? Yet there is some evidence that watching hard core porn does sensitise the viewer particularly teenage males to accept sex taking a certain form. In that sense, 50 shades may interest viewers in BSDM sexual culture, but the criticism is that 50 Shades depicts an abusive relationship. And viewers don't seem to be able distinguish between acceptable sexual behaviour and an abusive relationship.

I promise - 50 Shades is all about the romance and no male viewer could possibly be de-sensitised or have his sexual tastes distorted by watching it. The BDSM culture is a world away from what this is. This is not hard core porn, or even soft porn. It is about a complex romance and those who want to go and watch it for the sex will be sorely disappointed :D

I saw it with my husband last night and was surprised how much better than the books it was. I thought they were really badly written. Sam Taylor Wood has managed to somehow make it half decent and it would be a shame if she doesn't make the other two as they'll end up possibly as car crashes of films if made by someone else.

I did think they could have delved more deeply into his background as it seemed to skim over a lot of the content of the books, but overall it wasn't bad.

I think Jamie wasn't as relaxed as he was in The Fall because he was so busy concentrating on his American accent - we both commented that every now and then the Northern Ireland accent slipped through and maybe he should have kept it - after all, it was mentioned in the film that he was adopted they could have somehow changed the storyline to accommodate it.

I don't see any evidence for the bolded comment.

I was very much on the side of the novelist; the blonde woman, whilst her heart might be in the right place, was a self-appointed moral guardian. There are so many bad things in society that are arguably glamorourised; murder for example. Yet we don't have people protesting against Silent Witness.

The whole thing smacks of the Lady Chatterley's Lover trial- in which it was agreed that the morality of the book did not in and of itself make it a bad book. The prosecution's defence was partly that the novel was not well-written and used coarse language but also emphatically on the actions of the heroine in her desire to pursue an affair without being condemned by the writer. The immortal words of the prosecution lawyer come to mind: "Is it a book you would have lying around your own house? Is it a book that you would even wish your wife or your servants to read?". Of course the campaigner herself wouldn't be corrupted, or the people she associates with but the more impressionable members of the public might be corrupted. It happens again and again in censorship; censors can watch certain films without being depraved but it would have a corruptive effect on some undefined sector of society. Does this campaigner consider herself to have a higher moral sense than 'young people'? Sure young people are impressionable but we can surely hope that they have enough moral sense not to be abusive towards their partners- the ones that are already have other influences that have made them abusive.

I also find this faux support of BDSM very grating with all these critics, who don't seem to show any interest in BDSM itself, telling us that the BDSM community find it offensive. Do they really care about the accurate depiction of BDSM? Of course they don't- it's just an excuse. A group is offended ergo a film is bad and that individual's opinion that it's not very good is validated.
