Credit rating system - how does it work?

I'm seriously considering refusing to pay an electrician for work he's carried out in my kitchen which he wasn't qualified to do - story on this thread - with the likely result that when I hire a qualified electrician he'll probably insist on starting the work again from scratch.

I don't think the errant electrician will be able to do much about my refusal to pay, as he's liable to a heavy fine for doing work he's not certificated for.

He could damage my credit rating though - or could he? How does the system work? Would he have to provide some sort of proof of an unpaid bill, for instance, or would they just take a trader's word for what happened?

Apart from the original quote, there hasn't been any correspondence between us, or anything signed.

It would have to go through the Courts with him getting a judgment against you before it affected your credit rating.
