Just how massive does the Great White Shark get?

The ultimate living expression of power, intelligence and beauty in Lamniform evolution the White Shark (Carcharadon carcharias) is also the subject of more myth legend and fantasy than any other carnivore on the planet.
The 'average' size for a fully mature female is 5.5 - 6 metres and 1.5 - 2 tons.
There are several unverified (but probably reliable) specimens of around 7 metres and such a shark would weigh around 3.5 tons (for comparison the shark In 'Jaws' was 7.3 metres long).
Henry Mollet has a very good site on large captured White sharks for example (although I much prefer to see them alive and free in their natural habitat of course).
But I still wonder.
Before over fishing and due to their very long lifespans I think the odd gigantic specimen could have attained a length of 8 metres and a weight of over 4 tons.
What do DS members think? ^_^

Yes, Lydia is a small female that is part of Ocearch's White Shark tracking project.
It is a bloody interesting site to visit, if anyone is interested.
I find sharks totally fascinating. I'll definitely go and have a look.

They were quite timid though and the baby ones inside the reef were really cute..

A larger shark that I took from a jetty, this one was about 4 feet or so long, but they were everywhere outside the shallower water...

We also captured some dolphins from a boat, we have a video with about twenty in but this is the best I could capture on a stills camera. It's not exactly predictable where they'll appear so they are much easier to video.

What us humans are doing to sharks right now is a good indicator of what we're doing to the entire planet. We're plundering and not giving a toss about the consequences. 100 million shark deaths a year globally. Shameful. As Greenpeace NZ said recently in an ad, who's the real monster?
