    Saturday 13th September - talkSPORT

Adrian Durham presenting Matchday Live from the Stadium of Light with Ray Parlour at Stamford Bridge, followed by Call Collymore from Anfield

    Premier League
Liverpool v Aston Villa - Sam Matterface and Stan Collymore (5.30pm commentary), with Graham Beecroft at pitchside and Jon Norman producing

I didn't listen to the game live, but going by talkSPORT Listen Again it doesn't appear as if Graham Beecroft was on pitchside reporting duty, with Sam Matterface updating things like substitutions instead. However, Beeky did conduct their post-match interviews from Anfield - as other talkSPORT reporters at previous Saturday late games who have otherwise not been involved in the actual live match commentary have done in previous weeks. Given that on other games they've used reporters in an in-game reporting capacity as was commonplace in past seasons, they seem to be mixing things up a bit this term.

Looking ahead to talkSPORT's coverage of European club competitions this week, I've heard it confirmed that Nigel Adderley will be commentating on both Liverpool v Ludogorets (with Danny Murphy) on Tuesday and Partizan Belgrade v Tottenham Hotspur (with Ray Houghton) on Thursday. It'll be Jim Proudfoot and Michael Gray on Bayern v Manchester City on Wednesday. These two games will be Adderley's first commentaries on talkSPORT since the Champions League Final in May. I had been wondering how likely it would be for Adderley to return to the station's airwaves given that he wasn't part of their World Cup team and that the likes of Andrew McKenna, Gary Taphouse and Alan Parry as well as the returning Proudfoot have all done commentaries during the intervening period.

Also, Tottenham Hotspur v Nottingham Forest will be talkSPORT's live Capital One Cup Third Round commentary game a week on Wednesday (24th September).

I know Richard Shepherd was Radio Wales's commentator for the WC 94 qualifyers, when they were, I believe, a penalty kick away from qualification. I don't know how long he was working for radio Wales for.
for anyone who is interested, he now commentates on Cardiff city matches for their 'Cardiff Player' internet service.

Here's where my pile of Welsh Radio Times back issues from the early eighties comes in handy, because Richard Shepherd appears to have been their principal football commentator around 1982-3, alongside Ron Jones.
Why Radio 5 Live seemingly can't justify doing off-tube updates on such games, perhaps complimented by on-site pre-match, half-time and full-time reports and interviews taken from other BBC networks, is completely beyond me.

Well, no argument from me about this, it's ridiculous not to at least have some reports from a home nation in a qualifer. It would be too much to expect full commentary on all games from all the home nations - Germany vs Scotland is an obvious one that deserves it, Andorra vs Wales isn't - but surely a reporter is the minimum we should be expecting. I remember back at the turn of the century sometimes you would get Angus Loughran doing brief reports on all-foreign Champions League matches via phone, even that would do. As you say, they don't even need a regular Five Live voice, someone from BBC Wales would do just as well.

I've just heard it mentioned on their 8pm news bulletin that talkSPORT will be broadcasting "live, exclusive commentaries of every single Liverpool game in this season's European campaign" (to quote newsreader Ben Fletcher verbatim using the rewind button on TuneIn).

This is a bit of a departure for talkSPORT upon what we've heard in the last few seasons when they've generally opted to pick up rights to away matches for the British clubs involved on a game-by-game basis. However, during the 2000s they would sign up rights to usually two different English clubs playing in the Champions League on different days during the group stages - indeed I remember them covering Liverpool's 2009/10 European campaign, with them dropping into the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group that year, so I think the wording of their news bulletin indicates that they'll have the ability to follow Pool in the EL should that happen again.

I'd also be interested to know what they mean when they say their commentaries will be "exclusive" and "the only place to hear Liverpool" - are we talking exclusive national coverage as per their Premier League commentaries, meaning BBC Radio Merseyside and Radio City will still be able to provide commentary locally, or do they have fully exclusive UK radio rights (as I believe they had with Manchester United's home European games in the late 1990s)? I also imagine that BBC Radio 5 Live and the two local radio stations I mention will be able to gain commentary rights to Liverpool's away European games given that they are not LFCs to sell.

I don't think they are being covered locally so yes I expect it's a sole exclusive right for them. Merseyside Sport tomorrow promises coverage of Tranmere v Newport & Chester v Southport without mentioning the Liverpool match. To be fair it's not a massive surprise as they both dropped out of Europa League commentary last time they were in.

Ps looks like Everton's Europa League games won't be covered locally either.

Interesting news that, surprised it hasn't been picked up by the Media Guardian, or in fact or any other news website,

If Radio Merseyside will have the rights, could the BBC not broadcast that online nationally, I think they do this for Premiership matches broadcast by BBC Radio London.

talkSPORT confirm worldwide commentary deal for Liverpool's Champions League matches:
In a new partnership announced today talkSPORT, the world's biggest sports radio station, becomes official radio broadcaster of all of Liverpool FC's Champions League fixtures.

Kicking off with the group match against Bulgarian side Ludogorets on 16th September, talkSPORT will bring Liverpool fans full coverage including the matches against Champions League holders Real Madrid and Swiss side Basel as well as all of the side's matches in the knockout stages with former midfielder Danny Murphy part of the commentary team.

Internationally, the station will also broadcast the commentaries to fans around the world via talkSPORT.com.

Liam Fisher, talkSPORT Programme Director said: “Liverpool has an enormous heritage in European competitions and it's fantastic to bring the club's return to the Champions League to listeners. Balotelli v Bale is just one of the several thrilling encounters we've got to look forward to and with Danny Murphy behind the microphone we'll have expert analysis of every moment.”

Matthew Baxter, Chief Media Officer at Liverpool FC said: “Teaming up with a global sports radio station, like talkSPORT means that our fans get to follow all of our upcoming Champions League games in real time no matter where in the world they live. This season marks a big moment for the Club, as we return to the UEFA Champions League after a five year absence.”

    Upcoming Liverpool Champions League matches:
Tue 16 Sep - Liverpool v Ludogorets Razgrad
Wed 1 Oct - FC Basel v Liverpool
Wed 22 Oct - Liverpool v Real Madrid
Tue 4 Nov - Real Madrid v Liverpool
Wed 26 Nov - Ludogorets Razgrad v Liverpool
Tue 9 Dec - Liverpool v FC Basel

    Read more at http://talksport.com/press/talksport-broadcast-all-liverpools-champions-league-games-season-140916113894#AuvRyJfUVfTxiXDr.99

One would imagine that the BBC will still be able to secure rights to Liverpool's away games in Europe if they so wish?

This deal would mean that 5 Live won't be able to broadcast Liverpool v Real Madrid or any of their other home games?

Imagine if they get into the knockout stages and 5 Live can't broadcast commentary of a decisive second leg at Anfield.
