What I don't understand is why social problems would in any way influence the alleged need for us to be part of this political superstate?

The EU is not in the interest of the people of this country. First and foremost the economic union means companies no longer base their offices here - most big companies have large offices in countries they operate in, the union means they only need 1 for the 27 EU nations where as they usually have a significant prescence in say Australia and then Canada etc. This creates competition on taxes and I'm afraid it is a race to the bottom which will see the people of Britain screwed. We can't compete with the Irish corporate tax of 14%, if we did then we'd lose huge revenues so what will happen? 1. Companies leave and tax revenues fall, taxes on people rise or essential services cut. 2. We lower corporate taxes and people pay more or essential services are cut. That is going to ruin this country for the people who live here, just to please big business ... shocking, but then the EU doesn't listen to people anyway so why would they care?
