My old VCR broke a year or two ago and Ive decided to start converting some old tapes to DVD. I was quite shocked I must say when I had a look at some sites and saw the prices they are going for, even second hand ones on eBay. Some are more then the price of a DVD recorder.

Thank you, wow what a great bit of kit that is. shame about the price tag though!
a very expensive way of doing things!!!
I know... I did ask if I could have this for me forthcoming birthday (which is now tomorrow!) but I would told where to go!!
They should not be, because they are now extinct
and they have stopped making them,
you should be able to pick one up now,
that has a DVD Recorder Built next to it,
so you can transfer the VCR Recording
and put it onto a Blank DVD
and some even come with a HDD Disk inside
HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive,
so you can Record straight onto the Machine
I hope this helps
Decent kit will always become a collectors item, crap vcr's are often available in cash converters and the like for the price of a DVD, but the decent ones VHS or Beta will start commanding a price in years to come.
The VCR I got before that was also a bargain, it was a JVC Super VHS, I got new about 7 years ago for about £25, really smart looking in silver with auto set up and a nice big clock on the front and still working well
Of course, on eBay, auctions can be quite random, sometimes things can go for a pittance, sometimes other bidders will push the price right up, just gotta keep at it and be patient.
they always seem to have loads of VCRs

Right now on Ebay there are a lot of VHS machines including a couple of SuperVHS recorders for around 10 to 15 pounds. Granted they are not new but as long as they are in good working order they will last for years, most of the decent quality JVC and Panasonic SVHS machines were pretty supernbly built and pretty bullet proof.
I have a JVC 7500 SVHS machine from the mid 90s and it is still going strong, although it is rarely used these days.
Granted some people on Ebay do seem to be extracting the urine, one guy is selling a Panasonic SVHS machine for £300 :eek:
These LG have been going without bids from 15 quid

I have been wondering this for a while now.
However, what makes some very expensive are those that have features that make archiving tapes to DVD a cleaner process. TBC (time base correction), DNR (digital noise reduction) and VCR's with S-Video out will always command a premium price as these features do make a difference and there is nothing new to replace them.
In fact used VCR's are not often expensive as such - just relative to other used electronics. Panasonic NV-HS1000 S-VHS deck sold in 1995 for £1000. Used they sell for £70-100, so under 1/10 of new. Good value.
They're dirt cheap now.
VCR died a long time ago, there were a few cheap crappy ones available from Supermarkets and Argos, who presumably had them specially made?.
