    Then they ruined it with the final line. How they didn't see that in the editing process and think "load of old shit" and cut it out, I'll never know.

    They live in the flat over the bookies, yes, but no, Peter can't manage the stairs at the moment - he can't walk at all, having damaged his spine. It is going to take probably months of physio to regain full use of his legs.
