It does appear to be down for everyone at the moment. Lots of people on Twitter are bitching about it

Thanks both. Just found out by going onto Twitter too :D

It seems to be working fine using IMAP on outlook, if that helps anybody.

Setting up Thunderbird kind of defeats the objective of Gmail, really

I guess I'll have to do it to read my 'urgent' messages ;):D

Ahh! Nooo! It appears IMAP is still working but the web interface isn't, which is a pain because I just had to send a huge email using my iPhone.

I thought it was just me. If there is one thing Twitter is good for it is http://search.twitter.com put in Gmail in the search and literally within minutes there are people confirming that Gmail is in fact down!

I wouldn't mind usually, I am not a big email user, but today of all days when I need it more than ever?! Google you have let me down!! lol. We are probably making things a lot worse by always refreshing, we must be hammering Google's servers!

The web interface is down here too but on IMAP all is well.

    Most irritating.

Well, you can't install Thunderbird on, say a Cybercafe PC... Whereas, you can access your Gmail through any web browser on any machine...

Gmail seems to be back now, but I get an error when sending... something is still borked...
Oops... a server error occurred and your email was not sent. (#6502)

I would say that very few people on this forum access it via cybercafe and have their own PCs.

Having Gmail access via TB does not stop you accessing your e-mail by the web!

I access gmail via the web at least once a day as I find it easier to delete my spam using a browser. For reading mail TB is better as I have add-ons that allow me to arrange my incoming e-mail better.

And? Run Thunderbird as mail client at home, set it to leave all the mail on the server and use the web-interface when out and about. Easy.

Who said it did?! (Well apart from when it is down!)

One of Gmail's main strengths is its spam filtering! ;)

I am not trying to debate the advantages and disavantages of a local email client versus a web based email client here!

I was just saying that it defeats the objective of Gmail (what its initial and main purpose is). I am sure it is can be used in other ways and whatever suits you best. You go for it!
