Has the Advice section lost its appeal?

I only ask this because I see a number of threads on the GD board which would get far better responses in the advice thread as that is what people are actually soliciting.

Is it just that people can't be bothered or are we all getting befuddled with the definition of General Discussion?

I was going to list a few of these threads but as to not appear patronising I won't.

I must admit if I wanted any advice, the Advice forum would be the last place I'd go and would more likely post it in GD.

I posted in advice yesterday and gained some very useful advice.

I must admit to having seen some rather interesting advice given to others so can see why some may prefer to avoid it.

I have posted in advice a few times lately and i have been given really good advice. The last time was regarding a cut on my leg which had got infected.

I do read the advice section every day, but I generally have no knowledge of anything so I can't help.

There's a thread in the Advice forum which was meant to be posted here too (about a crocodile with an amputated tail?).

The advice section seems to attract a lot of unsympathetic people who just seem to want to criticise. I find that a bit sad, some people are downright nasty with their responses. Luckily there are some who try to offer constuctive advice instead of attacking.

Asking for advice in gd is like asking Hitler to organise your barmitzvah. It just isn't going to end well.

I disagree, I've seen some horrible responses in the Advice forum, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. That, coupled with the fact that GD is busier, would mean that a sensible answer to a problem would be answered more quickly when posted here.

I have posted a couple of times in the Advice forum, mostly travel queries and have always received some okay if brief responses. (DS needs a Travel Section)

However I pop in time to time to read it and find that the topics that seem to get the most "action" would be those about loss, cheating or relationship advice. It's like a hotbed of opinion there rather than actual advice at times.

If someone posts in a thread asking for advice in here, I will not take their problem seriously and I most certainly will not offer any constructive advice.

I also do the obligatory eye roll.

I feel an eyeroll sometimes coming on like you when I see certain advice gathering threads but as I would be called the board police I tend to keep it to myself.

I agree. Sometimes it depends on what you are asking though.

People twist your words and take everything out of context and judge you harshly in advice. You ask about one thing and they comment on another.

One of the problems is the amount of trolls who post faux problems just to see who will bite. So it's not surprising many replies are a bit cynical. Most genuine posters looking for advice get genuine replies.

Please don't keep it to yourself, some of us are suckers and I believe that I've been one this very morning. I can't tell one wind up merchant from another as I take everyone on face value, but a little guidance from someone, such as yourself, would be helpful in many circumstances.

So what if you're called board police? If you're pointing someone in the right direction then you're doing a worthwhile job and sod what other dingbats say, if that's what they call you then they've obviously done something that they'd rather you hadn't seen? Why ever else would they single you out? ;)

    Maybe people are just lazy.

Whatever, I'd only ever post something of a very practical nature in advice. Based on long observation, any life situation you'll be called a liar. Any emotional issues, you'll be ripped to shreds.

So unless fact based, such as advice on legalities, not really worth posting.

I do sometimes but you have some of those whipper-snappers on here who get offended at any level of helpful advice with regards to how a forum should kind of be run.

I am also a little intolerant ( I think we had this discussion the other day) of those sympathy seekers/grief porn etc. threads. but that is a whole other level of discussion.

Yep. I've encountered some extremely unpleasant folk in advice. They're not interested in giving any constructive advice, just picking posts apart until the thread ends up being closed.

One of those particular types was up to their usual shenanigans in GD last night in fact.

Most things posted in advice can be sorted better from a simple "Google".

Some are quite honestly beyond belief along the lines

"I think my Dad has just had a heart attack should I phone an ambulance"
"I have not had a poo for three weeks"
"I have to pee every 10 minutes and drink huge amounts of water am I diabetic?"
"The light switch on my wall is smoking is it OK?"

Throw some water on it. If it goes bang, there was something wrong with it. :D

Bit in bold- I enjoyed that thread! I gained an insight into how the digestive system works (mouth poo- urgh! I never knew it was possible!) :D

I have had some excellent employment advice in the advice section, also the weight loss thread is hugely helpful. Some problems posted there though are clearly to wind people up so I can see why they get rather odd replies.

You have to wade through the joke problems to get to the serious ones in Advice. And a lot don't want advice they just want to be told they are right as they have already decided what to do.

Advice? That's the DS Troll section isn't it? Lots of Troll "problems" with lots of troll replies and bickering.
