On my desktop PC i have a brand new Windows 7 OS.
On my laptop, Windows XP.
Can I use the same Windows 7 disk to upgrade the laptop or do i have to buy another Windows 7 disk?

Check your license. It more than likely says you can only use it on one PC, especially
If it is an OEM version that came with the desktop PC.

There used to be family upgrade packs with up to 3 licenses, but most likely this is a single PC license. It may activate on the second PC if it is not OEM (OS came pre-installed with the OS), but if you are online with both it may deactivate the license on one of them.

There should be a sticker on the laptop with a Windows 7 activation code on it if the laptop is licensed. You should be able to use the same OEM disk as from the desktop, but put the laptop code in when prompted.

Otherwise you're not licensed to do the upgrade.
