Surely their repeats were from before the Savile situation blew up?

Think the Germans edited out Glitter, from watching NyRainbow's old stuff on You Tube.

Yes, Glitter was edited out. I actually bought a lot of the Einsfestival shows off I Offer a while back, and the picture quality is superb. Many of those early seventies episodes are superb too, where the standard of the music is concerned. I'm not sure the show was ever visually better than the evidence of those remaining shows from the 72/74 period. 1975 is pretty uninspiring musically though, by comparison, as are a number of the 1976 episodes.

Further to my post in Part 1 about the short clips which 'Rare TV archive' recently posted on YouTube, a number of other rare snippets from early 70s TOTP shows have appeared on his channel over the last day or so.

For anyone who may be interested here are some links to a selection of what IMO are the most interesting of these brief clips:-

TOTP dancers outtake from 1969 (opening/end credits?)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkiAAxm5XF4

    Goodnight Midnight - Clodagh Rodgers - 25 December 1969
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxB4gYQ9umg

    Hum A Song - Lulu - 18 June 1970
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpSfEksNXLg

    Pan's People performances

Let's See Action - The Who - 18 November 1971 (black and white)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2NhBQrjfXQ

Fireball - Deep Purple - 2 December 1971 (black and white)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5iNoiDzUZc

Tap Turns On The Water - CCS - 25 December 1971
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTVJvistQQU

Little Bit Of Love - Free - 22 June 1972 (Remaster Colour Restoration)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMQSFicDdkY

    Let's Dance - Chris Montez - 26 October 1972
    Tie A Yellow Ribbon - Dawn - 22 March 1973
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2EMBhr5lYs

    Island Girl - Elton John - 16 October 1975
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxzmEENMuY

Two full versions of the 'Let's See Action' performance from 18-11-71 (see clip above) were uploaded to the 'One For The Dads' site on 27 June 2014 - the first clip is clearer and better IMO than the second time-coded version in this link: http://legsandco.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/pans-people-lets-see-action.html

A short excerpt from the BBC produced promo film for 'Brand New Key' by Melanie which I saw in full (in b&w) on TOTP on 20 January 1972 was also uploaded. I am not surprised if this still exists in the BBC archive as I believe I caught a glimpse of it in the Raleigh Chopper segment of 'I Love 1970' in 2000 hosted by Jimmy Savile:

I know many early episodes were presented by Jimmy but there were some others in the archive that weren't. No reason they couldn't edit the presenter links out of those shows really.

Yes the ''Little Bit Of Love'' remaster is particularly interesting, because the clip within my copy of the remaining 22 June 1972 episode is nowhere near that quality. Presumably it is possible to remaster what's left of the entire episode, which would make for extremely interesting viewing. Maybe the same could be done for the complete 30/12/1971 episode, also presented by Ed Stewart (although the introductions between songs are not audible).

I have high hopes more of those vintage clips will be discovered.

There must be more in private collections somewhere surely. I'd of loved to see more of the 60s episodes also.

In 2012 a FM called Flying Tart claimed on the TOTP 1977 thread that his mum appears in the bottom left hand corner of the screen as Ed Stewart introduces this Pan's People routine and a contact in the BBC archive department smuggled out a time-coded DVD copy of the 22-06-72 edition which gave his mother the opportunity to see herself as she appeared on TV as a teenager some thirty five years or so after the event (apparently she had to go out on the night the show was transmitted so missed the original broadcast).

I like the clip of the audience dancing to 'Nutrocker' as the end credits appear on screen. In 2006 a series called 'The Seventies: That Was The Decade That Was' was screened on Channel 5 and one episode included brief excerpts of the New Seekers singing 'Circles' on the 22 June 1972 edition of TOTP in sharp, pristine colour which surprised me as I thought it only existed as a substandard, washed-out print - certainly the picture quality of 'California Man' as it appeared on TOTP2 in 2001 was noticeably inferior.

The master tape was never wiped although, as you say, all the presenter links (including Ed Stewart's interviews with the six individual members of Pan's People in between the songs) are muted. Below is a link to a brief resume of the show which includes samples of all the featured artists. For the most part the programme comes across as a bit of a light entertainment extravaganza until 'Jeepster' livens things up at the end:

Over the past 24 hours 'Rare TV archive' posted an interesting link on YouTube which shows four presenter intro/outros to well known TOTP studio performances from wiped early 70s shows which the BBC edit from every repeat showing of the relevant inserts whenever they feature on compilation programmes:

Noel Edmond's intro to Elton John's 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' performance on 1 November 1973.

Jimmy Savile dressed as Laurence of Arabia introducing Rod Stewart with the Faces performing 'You Wear It Well' on 17 August 1972 (Ronnie Wood shuts the organ lid on Ian McLagan's fingers at the beginning of this clip).

Tony Blackburn's intro to David Bowie''s 'Starman' on 6 July 1972.

Jimmy Savile introducing Roxy Music's TOTP debut with 'Virginia Plain' on 24 August 1972 - I note he is wearing a T-shirt promoting the BBC's coverage of the Olympic Games in Munich.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOpTb36Isv0

I wonder if the snippet from 'Rocket Man' from Christmas Day 1972 (note the tinsel on the top of his piano) included in the BBC Four Elton John documentary is all that exists of this performance:

The last number one of the 60's is destined never to be heard again, as have three number ones from the early 70's, lets hope that the same doesn't happen a number one from 1979, not to mention a few Christmas number ones and more from the 50's and 60's.....

Looks like the next show in the reruns from 6/9/79 could have the plug pulled now just because some Bachelor Boy is at number 1.:(

Possibly and if so probably the end of the re-runs, the program is becoming a minefield for the BBC, remember the DLT episodes were pulled amid similar allegations.

Why has there been no Top Of The Pops for the last month? Has Cliff Richard done something dodgy?

Oh dear, it's not looking very good for further episodes from 1979 and into the 80's now. Cliff Richard now arrested. And he had a fair number of appearances on the show in this era. Can see the BBC scrapping further repeat showings now.

EDIT: He has NOT been arrested. But his home is being searched.

    Here we go again. >:(

    CLIFF HAS NOT BEEN ARRESTED!!!

The world is going crazy in whichever direction you look.

There is also no reason whatsoever to interfere with the scheduled and expected run of TOTP when it resumes with the 6th September 1979 edition. The BBC better not get into their reactionary mode yet again. >:(

They did over DLT and he hasn't been convicted of anything at this present time.

They will only cut his performance if he gets arrested, which he hasn't been and hopefully won't be if they don't find anything dodgy in his home.

But if he does, it could be difficult cutting out the number one altogether, which makes me think they would probably cut the episode altogether.

Not yet, if The Story of 1980 is in the works then we'll probably know by October.

Stop that attitude at once Ursula!

I wrote a piece earlier on the Cliff Richard thread on the Showbiz section, an area I rarely visit, but was filling with some very poor and idiotic posts. I was really pleased with what I myself wrote and got quite a few people just highlight it and then simply agree with it word for word. Unfortunately the whole thing soon got deleted.

Cliff has been a sitting duck for this kind of thing in my view. A lot of people nowadays just love to do him down for the oddest of reasons that I fail to grasp. Only 2 days ago there was a double page item about Tony Blackburn in the Daily Mail in which he himself was joking about himself not yet having been arrested. I winced as I read it and thought Tony should maybe have not said that. His autobiography and the paper article mentioned his boast about sleeping with 500 women after all. He regrets saying that now. I can well imagine why! You just never know what to expect now.

Cliff wasn't told that his penthouse was going to be searched. But as his own statement mentions in a barbed comment, curious how the national media seemed to be on hand ready to watch the law gain entry. This story already smells a bit iffy.

I know how you are feeling. The irony of the Savile case coming out at the exact moment when TOTP 1977 had reached a point where there were no missing episodes was bad enough, but for this Cliff story to blow up right at the exact moment TOTP 1979 is sitting slap bang in the middle of his big comeback No1 is unreal in the extreme.

But maybe, just maybe, we can hope that next month the tide will turn back, and a favourable outcome on the outstanding issues with our hairy cornflake TOTP presenter will once again unlock all those upcoming editions.

Problem is if Cliff's case drags on, this could play havoc with the remaining 1979 and 1980 shows, as he was enjoying huge chart success. Also we have the nine week Musicians Union strike to mess up 1980 as well.

And three shows after the strike Cliff co-hosts TOTP with Steve Wright.:(
