Very difficult indeed annette, so why do certain NGO's come out with hugely inflated numbers i wonder$
EDIT - my mistake, that should have been a ? ;-)
it`s looking like it was actually underestimated by a very large percentage, i dread to think what the final death toll will be if it`s now at least 1500. i very much doubt anyone who`s lost a loved one is caring who estimated what figures, it`s a tragedy of epic proportions.
this is very sad.
My daughter was a volunteer in Kathmandu a few years ago. she worked in a childrens centre, It was very humbling to see her photos of happy children , when they had so little.
She is devastated, desperately trying to find out any news of the children, thier families , teachers, and volunteers.
Very upsetting, that so many have lost thier lives and many without shelter.Very distressing scenes
This is where organisations like Shelterbox are so good. They have depots all over he world so can get in targeted aid quickly. An 'family' box for Nepal would contain a high-quality, all weather tent, bedding, robust cooking equipment, a 'field' cooker, axes for chopping wood, basic tool kits, solar lamps, etc., all in a sturdy lidded box which can be used for storage and the lid as a crib.
Agreed. Our aid should be for disasters such as this.
But not only for disasters....agreed this needs international reaction, but if we ignore economic development aid, I think we are storing up problems for the future. I'd rather all countries were developed enough to mitigate disasters and to be in a position to self- help rather than perennially having to go cap-in-hand. Give a man a fish, etc...
The story around Haiti’s earthquake death toll has only grown murkier and more controversial in the last year. In October 2010, a report was published in the journal Medicine, Conflict and Survival that estimated the probable death toll at 158,000 people. It received little media coverage. In May 2011, Agence France-Presse received a copy for an unpublished report originally commissioned by the United States Agency for International Development, which suggested the number might possibly be as low as 46,000.
Comments
I remember a few recent disasters where the governments have exaggerated the death toll in the immediate aftermath.
Quite massively.
how easy do you think it is to estimate the number of deaths immediately after a tragedy?

I'll second that, I don't hesitate donating to them.

The toll stands at 2,200 at present, they will need help I think.
Agreed. Our aid should be for disasters such as this.
It's really not that huge, when you consider that the 2010 Haiti earthquake killed 100,000 and the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami killed 228,000.
It is still tragic of course.

And I remember in 2004 when news broke we heard 100 's may have died
The numbers so far have little bearing on later figures IMO

Why do tragedies like this bring out the cranks
I wish an avalanche would land on this mouth-breather's bloody head.
It might shut his f***ing stupid vast gob up for good. >:(
