Test Football
I think the cricket world have a lot to teach the England football world.
They play one nation at a time... set up a series of test games, maybe 3 tests
maybe 5.
The series may take 3 or 4 weeks to complete, there is usually a winner.... a cause for
celebration in England..... a result !
Contrast that with football, the powers that be have us locked into an endless series
of qualifyer games with an increasing number of foreign teams....
it goes on and on............ 18 months of waiting.... and often lots of the games are meaningless .
Of course it is all designed to fill the coffers of the FA and Fifa .... home games, away games,
on and on, each team must play the others in their group !!!!
Then every 2 years a frenetic final in which England struggle to get into the last 8 .
Lets face it, things have changed, the last time we were a power in world football was
Italia 90 when Gazza was in his pomp. We actually got to the semi final and outplayed
the Germans back then....... but ... of course.... the Germans won on penalties !

Since those heady days the rich and powerful in the game have created the money making machine that is known as the ..............Premier league .............. and the percentage of English players playing in it has steadily dropped.... till we are
now a minority in our own football league as the top clubs scour the planet for footballing talent.
Isnt it time we got out of this stupid system of endlessly qualifying for tournements we can never win
let alone get into the last 8 ?
Why not Test Football...... say Sweden come over for a 3 match test match.......
The opening match on friday........ then wed........ then sunday.......... best of 3 wins the "Anglo Swedish Cup"
It would be a great week of football and the prospect of England being awarded the cup.
2 or 3 years later England go to Sweden to defend the cup in another great tournement.
Perhaps 6 months later an Anglo Italian cup is minted and Italy invited to Brummie for
the first of 3 matches, 2nd match maybe in Newcastle on the Wednesday and the final
match in Wembley on the Sunday.
England have all the prestige of Wembley and lots of other great stadiums so it will be no trouble
to get national sides to partake in a Football Test.
Year by year more national teams are invited for a 3 match Test... more huge silver cups minted
and before long we have a good number of Test Football teams to play and lots of great
games to look back on.
Like that old Kinks song..... Im Tired of Waiting... International Football as it is
currently organized is just endless frustration, but it does nt have to be this way.
We cant go on forever in this hamster wheel, forever going nowhere year after year spending 18 months qualifying for a poxy tournement we never have a hope of winning......let alone getting into the last 8
