Ofcom’s consultation on music formats allows complete music relaxation for heritage and small scale stations with existing target ages staying in place. This allows a common music log across the Heart network and some “sallies” without ages adjusting their music in one direction.
“Specialist”/genre specific stations are allowed to play up to one-third from outside their genre as long as their specialist hours reach 20 or over each week. Capital and Kiss increase the amount of non-rhythmic/dance/urban material they broadcast. Capital’s specialist runs to 5am on weekends including a “Capital Xtra” showcase.
Capital in Scotland and Wales, Real in Yorkshire and Smooth in the North East, East Midlands and North West are sold by Global to a friendly buyer led by the seconded Real and Smooth team. There will be some sort of joint management of Smooth to meet Ofcom’s requirement for licensees to be in charge of their programming.
The CC allows Real XS Manchester to be sold on its own to UTV due their existing share of revenue in the area and Smooth being owned by a different company. The station is co-located in Wigan. Real XS Scotland is sold to Your Radio.
Town and Country buys Real North Wales and applies to change the music to “rock-oriented” (but with speech requirements unchanged) allowing them to roll out Nation Radio. Nation’s current pending format request is agreed in January.
At Radio 1, Matt Edmondson and Scott Mills swap. Gemma Cairney joins Nick Grimshaw on the breakfast show, Sarah Jane Crawford moves to Radio 1 weekend breakfast. Sara Cox presents her last show for the network.
In September Capital move Marvin Humes and Kat Shoob to a networked drivetime show (with 1-4pm becoming local).
As a result of the new Marvin and Kat daily show Bauer stop carrying the Big Top 40 moving the In: Demand chart show to Sundays at 4pm – also carried on Kiss and Wave.
Magic, the London flavour, goes national on DAB. Magic North becomes Magic 60s and 70s which is also carried in London on DAB replacing Absolute 60s and Classic Rock. Absolute 70s closes.
At the end of the year UTV releases to the stock market it rejected a bid from Bauer to sell off "UTV Radio GB".
At Orion, Gem’s reach goes over 500k. Some growth seen at Free C&W and H&W although Birmingham stays static.
It would not only be good to have Gold back on DAB here in the North East and I think it is a very good prediction about David Jensen going to Magic and if Magic 105.4FM London does go national then I can just imagine David doing drivetime.
It is also a good prediction about Pat Sharp going to Absolute 80s, as for other things and I'm not sure what is in the pipeline and feel there is some change ahead as I was listening to Tony Blackburn on Magic AM this evening and as he said goodbye he said "join me next week at the same time on Gold" although he did not say Gold fully but I wonder if we are going to see Tony pop up on Gold or whether the Magic AMs will change to Gold?.
I heard Tony's slip of the tongue. He quickly corrected himself.
Did anyone else hear him tell the story about when he was told off by a certain Scottish programme controller for playing Rubber Ball by Bobby Vee on a previous station. He mentioned no names but it was obvious who he meant and what he thought of him. He then played Rubber Ball. Good old Tony. Priceless.

Capital previously broadcast 6 hours of specialist music on weekend overnights (till 5am). I do wonder if they'll give Jaguar Skills a full 3 hour weekly program for the network?
Network drive is most likely to happen with the excuse of it being "well received by the listeners of Smooth Radio Glasgow".
Your Radio will have to change the format of Real XS Scotland.
Good idea about Magic North, but I still think it's better for them to rebrand it as Absolute 80s?
<snip>Your Radio will have to change the format of Real XS Scotland.<snip>
The only change that would really be required is to share all programming across all three Your stations which would just be a form filling exercise as they all fall within the same Ofcom area.
The music requirements for the Paisley licence are "rock/pop music" which currently allow them to choose for a classic rock direction although it could equally go for a poppy direction. In fact there's quite a few directions it could go. It would fit what I've heard of Your Radio.

They could give Tom Russell a slot after their Friday night football show so that 96.3 is within it's format.

It's most likely that Knoxy will host the midmorning show, given that she's been doing a 'trial run' over Xmas and New Year (see today's schedule).
Capital FM South Wales sold to UTV - Red Dragon comes back on air with them
Heart North Wales also sold to UTV - Marcher Sound returns across North Wales
Global own the Red Dragon & Marcher names. It's much more likely that UTV would use their own brands (The Wave and/or Signal) rather than pay Global for those heritage names.
A networked version of The Wave across Wales (with separate breakfast and drive shows) is possible. Global can then get on with rebranding Real Wales as Heart.

If UTV had to network a brand, I think Juice would be their top priority. Signal or Wave could rebrand the current Heart Wales output overnight.
But I keep thinking that Red Dragon Centre could agree to franchise Capital South Wales?
More fears of R4 closing on 198KHz for cost reasons and technical issues.
Many BBC Locals to lose their AM outlets despite public outcry from sport fans.
Gold announce that they will remain on AM until they become availed nationaly on the new D2 mux.
Absolute to announce closure of its 1215KHz network in areas where coverage on D1 is good enough.
A new national DAB mux announced to carry 5x 192kbps channels in an attempt to improve audio quality. This will be joint funded by the BBC and the commercial sector. Ok this is more a wish than a prediction.
New local DAB mux announced for Somerset.
D1 announce a roll out of new transmitters to improve coverage to try and catch up with that of the BBC's national mux.
The BBC announce an earlier closure of all its HF transmissions around the world, perhaps as early as March.
1. Gold closes in all areas except London where it is renamed.
2. Further AM closures allow Ofcom to relax the rules regarding simulcasting on AM/FM
3. Smooth and Gold in London take advantage of the new regs and simulcast Smooth on AM and FM but rename to 'Smooth-Gold'
Nice to see DS run with the "Gold closing on AM" rumour. I personally think the network is done, they've inherited a large amount of licences that cost transmission money coupled with dwindling audience numbers. Global would rather use Smooth Radio instead to reach over 40s.
Said a little tounge-in-cheek I accept, but I can see Smooth London becoming Smooth-Gold for a period, if only to hang onto their 1548KHz listeners, who will naturally move away from AM as the platform closes. I suppose in theory Gold am could use the same name 'Smooth-Gold' in the interim as long as the programming was different.
Prediction for 2015. Smooth-Gold in London to become 'Smooth'
