My local Aldi is selling it's own branded free to air satellite receiver complete with dish, remote and cable for £49.99.
Can anyone who has one of these please tell me a little more about what channels I could get please ?
I already have a fixed Sky system. Would I be able to receive any more interesting English language channels e.g. on Hotbird if I bought one of the Aldi kits ?

Not really apart from BBC World.

Take a look at the channel FTA lists - you easliy pick these up with the dish that comes with the kit.

But remember you would have to move the dish to the chosen satellite.

    Astra 1 - 19.2e - http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-19.2E-fta.php

    Hotbird - 13e - http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-13E-fta.php

    Astra 3 - 23e - http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-23.5E-fta.php

    Athlantic Bird 3 - 5w - http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-5W-fta.php

    Turksat - 42e - http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-42E-fta.php (TNT is English  )

I only use my forigen system for music channels.

BADR 26e has english stuff on the MBC channels but i doubt you pull that in with that dish.

There is Movie1 on 13e / Hotbird - 24/7 movies - mostly English/US with Farsi subtitles - ...very nice adverts for health tablets now & again ...

plenty of other free gems around the arc but that usually takes a motorised satellite dish & a dish of 80cm or bigger to get the most otherwise you lose a few important sats with a 60cm or more with a 45cm..

That receiver may control a motor OK - previous ones did quite well but not 100% sure about these newer ones tbh.
There's a Free to air Gems fixed thread on here & there's a list HERE with links for free movie channels & others around the arc - lyngsat/ kingofsats or flysat list all channels but even using their specific search options they don't list most of the well known gems in one easy listing.

The main problem with these "budget" boxes from Aldi or B&Q. I have found after using a Ross HD sat box, is that you can spend hours on setting up your programme listings. Then a broadcaster goes and changes transponder or its operating characteristics for just one channel and you have to go through all the set up again. I have no complaints about the box which functions OK.
If you are going to use a fixed dish say on Astra at 28 deg East I would recommend purchasing a second hand Sky box usually for less than £3 with remote from a car boot sale and getting a dish etc off E bay With 10Mtrs of cable you should not be paying more than £15. This box will automatically tune in all the channels into the electronic programme guide. You then have the choice of getting a Freesat card from Sky (for £20) which will give you the FTV channels that are scrambled that a budget box or a Sky box will not receive (without card).
    These channels are:
ITV1 Ch5, depends on region and 5USA, 5*, PickTV, SonyTV, Motors TV.
