I think it smacks of "tokenism". Firstly, Alan Scott is only going to be appearing in a "parallel universe" to the main DC one,
(DC "We have a gay character...just a minor
one that doesn't appear in the main universe!")
secondly DC made a huge song-and-dance about the fact an "iconic" DC character was going
to be coming out...and then they bottle it by making an
obscure character only known to comics enthusiasts gay.
