The iPhone was introduced as an internet centric device.

Also I've never understood why people think 100mb is wlenough on a smartphone. What's the point of that when you can't use your smartphone for its purpose in a non wifi area. And then get blasted with a hefty bill if you do use the smartphone for internet.

Right, thats my mini rant over.
Does your rant cover those on PAYG who only pay about £7 a month?

No, but it covers those who pay £500 upfront for the device.

Well, either the O2 CS person was talking crap or your brother was.

There is nothing constantly running in the background using up loads of data.

As for 3G versus WiFi, the iPhone - like any other smartphone - should not use 3G if it has a WiFi connection.

Correct, there is nothing running ALL THE TIME in the background.

But there are backround services like updates, emails/other items that sync/download whilst your phone is not doing anything. Its not all the time like the o2 guy said, but it is frequent and can use up a lot of data. But like people have mentioned here, you can turn email sync off and turn off automatic updates as well.

Why? If that's the cheaper option for an individual's use case - which it often is - why does that bother you?

True. Hardly the same as having something running all the time and using up huge amounts of data though. Syncing is up to the user, if they have their phone set to constantly check for new emails and so on then that's up to them.

I have a few different push email accounts on my iPhone, and still use sod all mobile data.

As for updates, I believe that "Automatic Downloads" of Music/Apps/Books defaults to "Use Mobile Data = Off".

iCloud Sync only happens automatically when connected to power *and* WiFi. You can also sync with iTunes wirelessly, instead of over USB, but that is also WiFi.

Surely the cheaper option is buying a phone that isn't data orientated for a tenner. Has all the same features as the iPhone minus the browser/app store for £490 less.

Yes i was in a bad mood earlier aha. But my point still stands. I just don't get why people spend so much on something they won't need. The iPhone being one of the prime examples.

@matt D, very true. Also many apps sometimes download data without your knowledge. This happens on android a lot, but like you said its not a high enough amount to to affect your allowance.

Well the even cheaper option is not to have a phone at all and live in a cave eating berries. But that's not the point. Not everyone needs to use lots of data (or minutes or texts for that matter), but that doesn't preclude that they will gain benefit from having a smartphone for the data-lite occasions and times when they do. A little tolerance of different needs from your own goes a long way y'know.

Well we have three iPhones all on Orange and we can't fault them. You get 2 networks in 1 really. Customer service has always been good for us, and somebody who said O2 is most integrated with iPhones, i have to disagree. I know Orange has a full iPhone support department, and has more apps for the iPhone than any of the other networks.
