I've found a pic (and funnily enough the "outrage" is ferom the Daily Heil, lol).

If you look at the pic, you will notice it is taken from the left and not dead on. At the angle the screenshot was taken the cross is obscured by the large candle/flower doobry. If you were looking "dead on" then you would be able to see the cross just fine.

So the "error" lies in the angle the scene was shot from.

It wasn't covered up though, it was obscured - as in some flowers were put in front of it. Flowers are pretty commonplace at a wedding, and its not beyond the realms of possibility that a set designer just plonked the flowers down and didn't give a thought to the fact that the cross would not be seen in its full glory.

If there were reasons of not wanting to cause offence then it would have been removed completely, surely?

Clearly none of us know the ins and outs. We just rely on what the vicar said and that was that the cross was purposely covered so not to cause offence.

Be interesting to here what Corrie say. Maybe we're jumping the gun. I hope so.

But I guess they wanted that angle and made the adjustments to the cross. Anyway, it was a stupid thing to do, if somebody marries in a church it's probably not because it would look nice in wedding photos.

Thats my point - if it were for reasons of "causing offence" then it is pretty stupid.

The Cross is hugely symbolic in the Christian faith. Jesus was crucufied on it!

To have it covered up, in a Church, where it has every right to be, for such a non existant reason is IMO ridiculous, offensive and a big deal and I'm not even Christian!!

LOL, I'm going to leave this thread now because I have turned into some sort of Christian activist, weird!!

Actually its not about Christianity or religion for me its about political correctness gone freeking mad!

God bothers always got a cause, what corrie should be critized for is rosie spawn of the devil being allowed in the church at all. The whole thing was such a farce i never even noticed covered up crosses.

It's rediculous, we live in a christian country and can't even display a cross in a church because it might offend someone? Blimey, don't watch a church wedding then, if you don't want to see a cross.

I don't see your post as some christian activist, even as a non christian you can see that the cross has a right to be in a church.... I doubt very much they would cover anything up in a Mosque or Temple.

Was the Church used for Molly & Tyrone's wedding the same one that was meant to be a 'Catholic Church' for Liams Funeral ??

It's preposterous that anyone thought this was a story worth printing.

although i think this is a lot of fuss over nothing

i feel the need to say that its more than likely that this decision was taken by some white, non religious person in an effort to avoid controversy.
although it seems to me like thi shappens alot ive never actually seen someone of a different religion complaining... its like the white, non religious, not wanting to offend rather than those of others faiths demanding anything.

Have the beliefs of either character ever been mentioned in the series?

I don't think anyone is suggesting that those of other religions demanded anything. Why would they? If it were two characters of another religion marrying in their place of worship, would it not be expected to see symbols of that religion?

I think you're right in your assumption as to who makes this type of decision though I wouldn't say their colour or beliefs are a factor. The only important factors are their ignorance and stupidity.

I don't agree that it's a lot of fuss over nothing. It's an indication of the way that this country, a Christian country (and before anyone mentions multi-culturalism, that is all well and good but it doesn't negate the fact that the official religions of this country are Christian) is being allowed to go and the type of people that are being given jobs with any degree of say so.

Really? What if it had been a non-Christian service and symbols of that religion had been covered up "so as not to offend"? Would it have been worth printing then?

Covered up ................ obscured ....................... huge difference!

Flowers are commonplace at weddings but they will be placed so as not to obscure symbols.

The cross could not be removed completely as it is in the structure of the church. The reasons for this decision being made were for nothing else other than misplaced and misguided political "correctness".

And my point is that just because they haven't been mentioned doesn't mean they don't have them. You don't have to go around preaching 24/7 to have beliefs.

    touche

although i would have more of a problem, if i were a christian, of the way the only people shown as particularly religious in soaps are always old busybodies or those who "take it too far"...

    they are basically mocked

I did not notice that I couldn't see a cross. Anyone likely to be offended by the sight of a cross in church would be just as likely to be offended by the sight of the actual church.

I'm not religious in any shape or form but this has really made me angry, the idiocy of some people, whoever it was at Corrie should be ashamed of themselves. Lets face it the likelihood is that a huge amount of their viewers ARE christians for goodness sake!

What a pathetic state of affairs.

    ARGH!!

As for the church spending £4,600 on a silver cross i guess thats for their own conscience.

I feel offended for all the Christians out there that feel their religion being pushed to one side because it offends others:confused: The silly thing is that people of other religions probably wouldn't have even given the cross a second thought seeing as the wedding was in a CHURCH!!!!

Sorry, this has wound me up more than i expected.:o

Ironically, isnt you (a non Christian) getting offended on behalf of a Christian as bad as a Corrie exec getting offended on behalf of a non Christian Muslim/Hindu/Jew/Theist? Bit of a paradox there.

Nothing surprises me after I got a 'Happy Winterfest' card from the council last year, with the seismic shift from conservatism to liberalism in this country over the last 15 years I cant see why anybodies surprised anymore. This is just another example of Britain's culture being watered down in the name of socialism. I make no distinction between this and a BBC News reader being told to remove her cross or a BA flight attendant, especially when 'British' is incurred with both corporations.

I'm Catholic BTW. I should feel rather honoured they have that much confidence to take down a religious symbol that I identify with. I'd hate for somebody else to feel they have to step on tip toes in case of offending a faith I belong to and to be put under that 'do not offend- their religious' barrier

Yes I do read the Daily Mail. :p

I guess it touched a nerve in me and your 'winterfest' card just about sums it all up. Christianity is something I was brought up with even though I'm not a practicing christian.

I dunno, things just all seem a bit crazy....

I'm not religious but how stupid are these people ?

Who could possibly be offended by a religious symbol being present in a church ?

She said the cross was directly behind the vicar and would probably have been too distracting when lit.
So she would've covered it up. :)

You mean, that story might not be exactly as reported?

Honestly, if we could wire up people's knee jerking to the national grid we'd could power the whole country.
