I take it you're a fan of the grittier Bond then?

It's good to see Dalton getting credit for his portrayals of Bond, because Timothy did a lot of research into the role & played it just like it was written.

TND and TWINE are way down my list.

TND's martial arts doesn't sit well with me, Carver is a really dull villain and Terri Hatcher is totally wasted

TWINE features a character named solely for the purposes of an (awful) joke (or 2) and requires you to believe Denise Richards is a nuclear scientist who spends every day wearing hotpants and a tight top.

For me, Brosnans era crossed the line in terms of excess and double entendre - it became a parody.

I left the cinema before the end of DaD so I can't really be accused of bandwagon jumping, I've watched it since and I still think its the worst Bond ever - from terrible CGI, surfing to TheClash, and invisible cars to the Madonna cameo (shudder).

You're spot on about Die Another Day.

That was the moment that Bond crossed the line for me.

I know Bond majors on gadgets, but the thing about Bond gadgets is that you can almost imagine them existing, but the invisible Aston Martin was the last straw for me.

Thank goodness that Bond has returned to basics with Daniel Craig, along with the return of gritty & hard portrayal.

For me it has to be Sean Connery, the first, the only, the best bond ever.

I think they all brought unique things to the role and they're all worthy Bonds.

However for me it will always be Sean at the top of the list.

    i like all the bonds.

they have all brought something to the mix and aside from Dalton and Lazenby have made at least one bad one (though not really because of the actor playing 007).

i love Moore because when I was a kid his films were always on and i feel nostalgia for it, but i think Dalton brought the right levels of sophistication and threat to the character.

Think all are relative to their time. Would like to have seen more of Dalton.

I didn't really like Bond until Daniel Craig, and I suppose it's not seen as a Bond FIlm, and even then I hated Quantum of Solace. Casino Royale i guess is the only Bond film I truly love.

I like a grittier, troubled Bond.

    Sean Connery
    Daniel Craig
    Timothy Dalton
    George Lazenby

I do love Roger Moore but was not a fan at all of Pierce Brosnan.

It's a shame too, because the opening sequence in North Korea, coupled with the opening credits showing Bond being imprisoned and interrogated as the backdrop to the song, was pretty awesome. It sank quicker than a lead balloon after that. The second half is a stinker.

Forget the best Bond, what about the best supporting character.

Such as the incredibly performed "Oh, Oh!" man from AVTAK.

And Die Another Day hatred just seems to be a band wagon thing recently. It isn't THAT bad. Not as good as his other three but still a good film.

I've always thought that Die Another Day was pretty good for the first half, then completely died from the halfway point (around the time he got back in with MI6)

    My Bonds in order.

    Connery
    Craig
    Dalton
    Brosnan
    Moore
    Lazenby

    • Sean Connery - was the best Bond. Period!
    • Daniel Craig - comes a close second, I'm not saying that becuase he is the current Bond. He's given Bond a gritty, realistic edge, that in today's movie market, I feel is required to take the character further.
    • George Lazenby was rubbish, but he was an australian car salesman, who got the role "by accident" (he accidentally punched the stunt co-ordinator, and Brocolli assumed he was acting :/ ).
    • Roger Moore - made it too campy for me, safari suits, cars jumping rivers to duck whistles, plus he looked old enough to be Moneypenny's dad :/ (man with the golden gun people!!).
    • Timothy Dalton - Gave Bond his dark tone/edge back, Bond became vicious again, Dalton could really kick ass! Those people who don't know who Timothy Dalton is, SHAME ON YOU!!
    • Pierce Brosnan - made Bond into the lovable rogue again, he got beaten, he got broken, he still made terrible puns :/ He maintained some of the emotional pain Dalton injected into the character, I wouldn't say he evolved Bond like some of predecessors, but he certainly took him to new places.

Of course the "new" Bond films aren't what some would categorically state as being Bond. We know they've run out of source material, and look how adapting the short stories turned out (Quantum of Solace). Other than rebooting the franchise, or FAITHFULLY re-filming each book as a film, then Bond needs to evolve to survive. We already know they are trying to make Bond more like the Bourne films, and I think Daniel Craig is a great fit for this.

I've always preferred Timothy Dalton as Bond. His two films are my faves.
It's a real shame he never got to do a Goldeneye style Bond film.
Craig is good but QoS was a very poor Bond film.

Timothy will always be my ultimate favourite as his Bond was more like the Bond in Ian Fleming's novels, the same goes to Daniel too, I think Daniel is doing an amazing job - I can't wait for 'Skyfall'. It would be nice to see Daniel do a few more and overtake Roger as the longest serving Bond.

Very very good to see Dalton getting so many votes here. When my friends ask me who I think is the "best" Bond I always say Dalton because he is the closest to the 007 of Fleming's books.

If you asked me my favourite Bond I would say Moore though, because I find his movies the most enjoyable overall.

In fact I think Connery is the weakest Bond of them all mostly because I think he is the least convincing, I rarely rewatch any Connery Bonds but enjoy all of the others including Brosnan and Craig. Lazenby gets too hard a time I think, OHMSS was a far more emotional film than any that Connery or Moore had to deal with.
