i don't think i'd mind in the least if bbc3 was axed but bbc4 would be a huge loss.

Agreed, to me BBC 4 represents the best of what public service broadcasting should be.
Without it there would be little left on the BBC worth preserving.

BBC 4 definitely is the closest station to follow Lord Reiths vision that the BBC should "inform, educate and entertain".

I take dim view of the government instructing the BBC to pick up the tabs for the Monitoring service, the External Services and fund more of S4C. Effectively the government has dipped it's hand into the licence payers pocket, how far will this go!
Maybe part of the consequences the loss of BBC 3 or 4.

Well they do say ignorance is bliss....

If you have watched a total of less than five programmes on both channels, you are hardly in a position to provide a valid opinion....

    Absolutely agree with you:)

Perhaps Flyer10 would like to post a list of what would make an ideal days viewing for him(honesty a requirement)!!

Some of the comments posted and the article itself are more like a sleazy caption from the Sun.

I would warrant that most of the BBC operations are looked at but this does not mean it's going to happen. Is this not the sort of "looking" that we all want into this kind of operation....like expenditure of these closed companies or individuals?

Yeah I agree completely. BBC 4 is worth the license fee alone. BBC 3 however should be scrapped! It is utter trash! Apart from the Family Guy and American Dad shows(move them to BBC 2). We can do without another Danny Dyer documentary.

Watched Beautiful Equations the other night, the perfect BBC4 programme and I presume something that Flyer 10 wouldn't even consider worth his/her time.

1.5% pay rise. Inflation at 3+%. Utilities going through the roof due to foreign ownership greed. Yet i still have to find the licence fee whether it does up or not and still feed the family.

The BBC Trust should be looking at ways of bring in exta income to support the BBC not water it down. If they had their way it would be back to the 1970's with Radio 1 closing down at 7.30pm and BBc2 starting at 7pm!

If average Joe has to 'Keep Calm And Carry On' then im sure the BBC can and still keep its present services.

Isnt it the BBC Trust who said not that long ago they must take programming risks? I didnt think closing down channels was one of them!

I watch more BBC4 than 1&2 combined, both of which are becoming increasingly irrelevant to me.

I suspect this is a ruse. Remember the outcry when it was touted that 6 music would have to close?

I'm sure the beeb are hoping for a similar response to this "leak".

I've enjoyed the "Time to Remember" series on BBC4, but each to his own. My three year old grandson loves CBeebies - I wonder what flyer10 likes.

I did wonder that myself, get people talking about the stations, get the Culture secretary making a statement to the effect that "it would be a pity of cultural diverse programming were threatened, blah blah blah" and before you know it the "threat" has passed.

With the BBC looking into possibly having to close BBC3 and 4 there has to be no hope for further HD channels from the BBC in the near future. See here

Zai Bennett to become the new controller of BBC Three

Why would this happen if they are about to close BBC Three down?

I don't understand why this thread was started in the Freesat Forum as it will affect all platforms including the OP's Sky service.

This speculation is the consequences of the tv licence settlement that the BBC fought to get...
    • The licence fee will be frozen until 2017.
    • BBC will takeover from the government funding the BBC World Service and part-funding S4C.
    • BBC will contribute over the next four years to bring super-fast broadband to rural parts of the country that the private sector will take longer to reach.
    • BBC will provide resources to meet capital costs for up to 20 local TV services.
This is equivalent to a 16% cut in the BBC budget over the period. When you allow for inflation it means that the BBC programming pool is shrinking. So the BBC has 2 options...
    1. Maintain the number of channels but their programming budgets are cut. Earlier this month, Mark Thompson announced that the BBC has to make £500 million in cuts. There is already been postings informing us which downsizing has been confirmed. With the amount of hours of reality tv (Strictly Come Dancing, Young Fishmonger/Butcher of the Year, etc.) and lifestyle programmes (BBC2 daytime) being used as cheap-to-make schedule filler, it shows that the BBC already does not have adequate funding for its existing tv channels.
    2. Reduce the number of channels and invest the closed tv channels programming budgets into the remaining tv channels (BBC4 programming returns to BBC2). With less money available, I can't see how the BBC can justify continuing spending around £90 million for BBC3 with its questionable programming. IMHO, the tv licence should be filling in the gaps that the commercial PSBs can't offer. With the success of X Factor, it shows that ITV is providing reality tv and we have T4/E4 serving the young adult markets.

If a company that receives billions in licence fee per year can't run 4 main TV channels I'd say there is a big problem with inefficiency somewhere. If the BBC cut channels I would like a cut in the licence fee quite frankly.

Not for me it wouldn't as I can't recall ever watching either BBC3 or BBC4, and most of my TV watching is BBC TV!

So closing them seems to be an intelligent way of solving their serious budget problems. And it would certainly solve the BBC HD problem... ;)

IMO, BBC3 & BBC4 need to go, their a waste of money. BBC1 & BBC2 is more important.

The problem in the BBC is a massive overbloated bureaucracy which only exists due to guarenteed licence fee income- there is simply no reason whatsoever why we can't have BBC 1-4 with the income the BBC receives.

How do you think it will solve your perception of the BBC HD problem?

Good, BBC3 was ChavTV while BBC4 was toffTV.

Ive probably watched less than 5 shows on those channels combined.

Same here, can't remember the last time I watched a show on either channel. The only thing I ever remember watching on BBC3 was The Real Hustle.

BBC1 & BBC2 are already thought of as more important hence why they recieve the most investment. BBC3 & BBC4 are not a waste of money. Just because you don't like them doesn't make it so. I also think that the Telegraph story is just made up nonsense.

They are not a waste of money they provide a service for those who are not addicted to soaps and reality TV.
Just because the programming on those channels is not your cup of tea does not warrant you stating that they should go.
Mind you if you did get your way you would probably end up with a number of their programmes on the two BBC channels that you do watch!!:p

The tough licence fee settlement will not see the closure of BBC TV or radio services, director general Mark Thompson has maintained, despite the BBC Trust chairman refusing to rule out the move in the final conclusions of his Strategy Review.

Agree, BBC3 I can't find anyhting worth watching really, but BBC4 has had some cracking stuff on there, which would be missed if it went.

As for lack of money, the fee stretches to quite a bit theses days BBC 1 - 7 for radio, Local radio, wesbite, BBCTV 1- 4
BBC HD, iplayer, mobile web etc, it all takes money, if the economic climate is poor elsewhere, and overseas station s are

not buying as much, then is must have a knock on effect ?

I object to British Tax Payers paying for a Scottish TV service.

They might be a part of the UK but at the end of the day they have their own parliament and presumably the means of raising some taxes. If they want minority programming thats different to the rest of the UK, then in my opinion the Scottish people should be paying for it. The same with Welsh programming.

The BBC produce output thats suitable for the whole of the UK. If a minority want specialist programming thats only of interest to their own area of the UK, then they should pick up the bill for it.
