The fact that all money raised goes to members, or ex members of the British armed forces makes it a political symbol.

And the money is raised by the same said servicemen. ex-servicemen and families/friends. Donations from members of the public by choice, and from businesses sympathetic to the charity.
Or should all corporations/business be banned from donating to any charity in the future. as most can be seen to supporting a single issue?
Out of interest, with may Irishmen having served in British armed forces, has the Legion ignored them in the Republic? As far as I am aware the Legion has members in the Republic, and I can only assume that it uses money to support Irish ex-servicemen.

I see James McClean has been on the receiving end of death threats from mutant scum who have problems with people expressing their own opinion.

I wonder if these scum bags issue death threats to people walking down the street not wearing a poppy?

They would have had to shoot me as well as I never wear one. I give to the charity all the time, in fact I don't know how many times during collections, but I'd end up wearing about 1,000. I just don't like wearing them

If he was expressing his own opinion then fair enough, thats what our troops fought for, freedom of speech, but if he was making some politcal statement (seeing as where he comes from) then I dont think thats right.

Sending death threats to someone for not wearing a poppy is never right.

Oh the irony, the threats were sent by a former private in the British Army.

I like Owen coyle (especially how he handled the muamba incident) but this is disgusting.

Yeah, good on Coyle for not respecting the players personal choice.

He was right. McClean is a team player, and should abide by the rules, not make political gestures.

But still it's a choice and I don't really see how it would affect the morale of the team.

A great many supporters would not like to see such offensive behaviour from a member of their side.

He is paid to comply with workplace rules.

It's good to see a footballer sticking to his principles, it's disgraceful that he was sent home.

Good to see too that out of the few players who didn't wear them none of them were Muslims . As far as I know all Muslim players in the PL wore them and observed the silence . So the EDL haven't got that ammunition.

Agree. I hope he continues to stick to them. It's sad how our brave soldiers fought for basic rights that are now being abused by the very people who purport to honour their sacrifice. Shame on Owen Coyle.

That's unbelievable if he was sent home for not wearing a poppy. This is exactly the type of thing I hate about the whole poppy thing; nobody should be forced to wear one. I don't care if they're in the public eye; I can't believe some people are sad enough to complain / make threats about it.

I wear a poppy wristband, because I like the idea that money goes to the soldiers, but I don't see how you can drop a player for not wearing one, that's a fairly ridiculous carry on.

Clubs have rules and regulations every player has to abide by them mcclean would have known this but chose to ignore
This maybe somebody needs to remind him what NI was like in August 1969 espically for the catholic community.
