I do think though there's a story to be told, about what would happen when the muggles inevitable find out about magic.
I quite like the idea of that. Although I'm quite sure that The Ministry would employ people to keep the secret in check. Aurors, Obliviators, even use of the Imperius Curse if needed.
Muggles finding out about the magical world, I mean muggles with no relations who are magically gifted is nothing new. People were always on hand though to modify the memories of people exposed to magic so there was ever any lasting damage to the secret of the magic world.
If we let muggles in on the secret, it changes the Potter world as we know it, forever!
