Why is Reddit so toxic and hateful?

For the most part it is not. The good thing about reddit is you can tweak it and customise it to your own likes by subscribing to subreddits on things you like to discuss and unsub all the main reddit pages. You only see the the bad side of reddit if you go looking for it. I think having the hateful subreddits are a good idea, it keeps these people away from the main reddit pages for the most part.

I do feel a little sorry for ellen in this instanced because i am one of those who thinks she is just the fall girl for the shareholders pushing changes through. At the same time though she is a smart enough woman, she has to have known what would happen once they started banning the subreddits and leaving worst subreddits up.

It is good to see the usual scumbags in the press trying to push their agenda though. The women in the west are such poor victims *plays a small violin*

The general rule of thumb with Reddit is to avoid pretty much all the default subs as these are full of trolls, karma-****, meme-posting kids, and mods on power trips waiting for the next bandwaggon to jump on. The rest of the site is just like any other discussion board and kept out of it all.

If you create an account you can filter out all the rubbish and only subscribe to the subs that interest you.

I like No Sleep on Reddit, full of ridiculously over the top, supposedly genuine, horror stories. I haven't ventured further than that as yet.

No Sleep's good. I love me some creepypasta. The No Sleep podcast's not bad, either.

My favourite is "my dead girlfriend keeps messaging me on facebook".
The photos are goosebump inducing. I don't care if it's made up, it's terrifying!!

That one really shat me up. I like the ones that take on a life of their own; it's fascinating, like watching urban myths being born.

Think my favourite ever creepypasta, though, and the one that can give me the chills on a sunny day just by remembering it, is Candle Cove.

Also, have a nose around for Sad Satan. But DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING. (Some asshole put out a "fake" version of SS to troll the people following the story which allegedly contains extreme gore and child pornography in the files, as well as nasty malware. That's NOT the one that's on YouTube, though, which is safe).

Why :(?? She was terrible at her Job, if you think this is just about bullshit like Sexism "they only hate her cause she's a woman!" type thing, you couldn't be further from the truth, the whole fat hating part is ONE thing out of many. Look at it this way, if it WAS about Woman Hating, why did the biggest uproar come from her firing the leader of IAMA, ...who's also a woman who is well liked in the community??

She badly managed the website, didn't seem to understand the community focus of it, which lead to her making some wrong choices which caused people to go against her, enough to the point where she had to go. Simple as.

If all you're going to focus on is ONE group of that, the fat shamers or whatever, then you're just being biased towards your cause, because there were many other things she did that were messed up that had NOTHING to do with that.

What's your view on her meeting with an employee who had cancer, telling him his job was on going and then a week later firing him citing that he was too ill even though he wasn't?

Free speech only applies to government, though. It doesn't apply to a revenue-driven business like Reddit. As far as I can see, Reddit isn't stopping anyone from saying whatever they want. What they are stopping is allowing people to say whatever they want on Reddit's own site, which belongs to no one but Reddit.

As it is, Reddit's decisions and policies aren't affecting those Reddit users' right to free speech at all, so your concern is groundless in this case.

IMO, what we're seeing is a fight between a company and its users for control over the contents of the company's asset. In other words, both sides so far aren't having much luck in finding a balance that works.
The difference here is how a group of ideological keyboard warriors put pressure up on one website to take down things they disagree with or find problematic. Then the hope is the rest will follow - either fall or we'll shame you into submission (such as a competitor to Reddit, Voat had its servers shut down because of the same pressure being put on its host. This is not one website deciding to shut down topics that they don't want to see discussed whilst there are alternative websites available, this is a group of vocal people demanding topics being censored across all websites or we take your website down, a la Voat (which considering it got capital funding after, was a massive success...).

A similar thing happened with Australia to get GTA V off the shelves of at first Target, then other retailers - the sole purpose is to remove that media from public consumption.

What annoys me is how you get individuals who say that women should be treated equally but in the same breath demand that women should be given preferential treatment and not doing so or even committing the heinous crime of criticising a woman is misogyny.

As a egalitarian, I would expect anyone to be treated the same - equality of opportunity. If a man does something stupid, he should be criticised - whether a blue collar worker or David Cameron. If a woman does something stupid, she should be criticised - and that includes Ellen Pao. Not exempted because they just happen to be the right gender, sexual orientation, skin colour or race.

I've only recently started browsing Reddit. My favourite at the moment is the Glitch in the Matrix thread where people write about their strange/creepy experiences.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/oeo0h/reddit_tell_me_your_glitch_in_the_matrix_stories/

A bit off-topic but does anyone have any non toxic/non hateful threads they would recommend on there?

    Cheers!

Reminds me a bit of that time a bunch of people tried to do the same thing to a website that posted an article they disagreed with. I forget the details, but it had something to do with gaming culture...

Except she didn't fire Victoria Taylor, in fact the new CEO Alex Ohanian did.

    Time for a new petition?? :o >:(

The revolt started a month ago when reddit decided to ban fatpeoplehate and other subreddits but decided to leave racist subreddits up and shitredditsays. Also did anyone ever find out why the neogaf subreddits were banned?
