Boston.com The Big Picture has put together a year in pictures, well worth a look. Its split into three parts, the third should be published today at some point.

(Part 3 coming soon)

My personal favourite from part 1 is the US Marine using his body as a shield to protect the Afghan man & his child. In part 2 the aerial view of the sinkhole is pretty insane  There's some great photos there, some sad ones too :(

Wow, some of those photos are amazing.

Seriously though, take the warning on #33 on page 2, that is gorey!

The CF-18 fighter going down is pretty amazing.

I can't work out if that guy by the blue car is either stunned or......meh....

Some amazing photos, thanks for posting the links Jammy08.

    Here's part 3

The capture of the female US luge (athlete/boarder ) was very good. #17

The bull picture made me feel slightly ill, but the picture of that poor woman that had acid poured over her was atrocious.

The ones of the Poles around the cross and the man walking over the dead bodies of the Haitians were very sad.

I liked the photo of the new year from London though.

    The sinkhole.

I know I shouldn't lower the tone of the thread, but I couldn't help shouting THIS IS SPARTA out loud.

    Thanks for the link Jammy08.

Even better was when I linked up to Russia in colour 100 years ago http://boston.com/bigpicture/2010/08/russia_in_color_a_century_ago.html

It does feel like you have stepped back in time, they look so 'now' at first I thought they were fake.:o

Love those Russian pictures, definitely worth a second look. Cheers. Didn't you post some American ones as well or did I stumble on those somewhere else?

Amazing photographs though some of them depressed the hell out of me as they reminded me what a thoroughly shitty place this world and some of its inhabitants can be.

The one with the army men shielding the man and child made me cry :o as did the old man saying goodbye to someone on the bus :(

Number 13 on part 1 is an (especially) great photo.

And number 34 is the stuff of nightmares...

Part 2 number 7 kicking the ball is very evocative.

Part 2 number 13 - the moon - it looks like it's the size of a football! I think because the background isn't obviously Saturn.

Great Glasto image number 31 - off to post that on another forum.

and yep, wow to the sinkhole at 35! great use of scale and composition to show off how bizarre and big it was.

    part 3

Gotta love the miners' message at number 3. Favourite story of the year, if not the decade.

the olives at number 13, is quirky but cool.

and the very recent number 31, policemen on Westminster Bridge, could end up being an iconic image of our time (slap to the copper on the right with his shield the wrong way up though, I'm sure Photoshop would have been too tempting for me if it was my photo)

The failure to have any image relating to the Icelandic volcano eruption and ensuing chaos across northern europe is quite an omission in my opinion.

    Memorable images noretheless.

The volcano is the first pic in collection 2. One of the best images in my opinion.

I do always wonder how the photgraphers can just stand there while some of these horrible things happen. Particularly the photo of the crowd stampeding; and the one of the people lying dying on the street after an explosion.
