Sherlock, your top 3 candidates to play Moriarty.

..as the one in the last episode was a disappointment.

Mine are

1) David Tennant
2) Alan Rickman (if he was 20 years younger)
3) anyone other than Andrew Scott

I`m not saying mine are any good.. I`m not an expert at modern day youngish Brittish actors.

    Mr Magoo.

It's early days in the series, maybe Scott will be fine having said that Tennant would be ok but i'm not ready to see him back on the box yet, no to Alan Rickman, against this Sherlock anyway.

    How about Paul Rhys.

I think the producers/writers were trying to go for an original take on Moriarty. When I think Sherlock Holmes I still think of Jeremy Brett - same for the other characters as well.

I think I would have preferred a less campy and certainly an octave lower performance from Andrew Scott but hey - perhaps he's not the real Moriarty at all!

Anyway, in response to the thread I would have cast one of the following:

David Harewood - just about young enough to be a contemporary of Sherlock but with a bit of menace and gravitas

Matthew Macfadyen - he can play very cold characters indeed

    David Morrissey

Idris Elba. Just to piss off the whiners even more than the current choice. If the writers pull a "oh he wasn't the REAL Moriarty" stunt like some people are predicting, I will be most displeased. That ending was probably the best bit from the two very disappointing latter episodes (although I also enjoyed the Golem fight, though it was rather irrelevant in the grand scheme of things).

Good suggestions, either of those would be great.

Would it have been interesting to see Moriarty played by a woman?

    Perhaps Miranda Richardson...

I was really pleased with Andrew Scott, I just thought the script was a bit unforgiving.

    John Simm.

He was excellent as The Master in DW before they made him blonde.

Failing that...see what kind of spin David Tennant could put on him

Jessica Fletcher(Angela Lansbury). Isn't about time that she was exposed for the mass murderer she is?
    Remember, she never dies!:D

I'll stick with Andrew Scott thanks.

I trust the judgement of Moffat/Gattis far more than any of the armchair experts on this forum.

He could get in some practice for being a sat-nav voice: 'IN 400 YARDS, TURN LEFT! ' :D

Moriarty is an Irish name after all.

My only gripe was that you could spot who he was a mile off.

Colin Salmon. He deserves a good , meaty role and he's quite attractive too. Not that it matters;)!

    Clive Owen. I like him!

I thought Andrew Scott was very good indeed. His performance suited the script he was given.

To be fair, I don't think the ones suggesting Brian Blessed and Angela Lansbury were serious.

(or maybe they were? )

I don't think any actor would have been suitable with the script as it was. Andrew Scott did the best he could with what he got.

That said, Aidan Gillen would have been an interesting choice. He's Irish, and he can be quite intense and menacing.

Anthony Stewart Head, if he was younger. Although, I'm kind of biased as the final showdown reminded me of one of the scenes in Doctor Who between him and David Tennant.

    Andy Sirkus, maybe.

I dunno - I never would have picked Martin Freeman for Watson, but he's doing a great job. It's hard to know unless you see someone in the role.
