It kind of defeats the whole point of going online and pitting your skills against other players if people could just cheat.

Yeah i know, so why not just make them offline only ?

Its because Microsoft are such crybabies. They are so obsessed with a bloody gamer score or as some people call it d**kstore mines bigger than yours thing.

    Because they're no longer necessary.

Cheat codes were never for the benefit of gamers, but for developers and testers- if a change is made to level 4, then the developers need a way to check it works without having to play all the way through levels 1, 2 and 3 correctly

When games were new and computing power wasn't much to talk about, then that needed to be in the game itself.

Nowadays, now we have the computing power to spare, it's much easier to link your development PC to the console or keep the development programme running in the background and make changes on the fly and have other commands in the devkit, separate from the game, which serve any skip-related purpose.

I know that doesn't cover 'fun' cheats that generally pop up because a bored developer coded it in one day (Big Heads Mode, etc) or those put in manually for amusement purposes (GTA)- but that's the long and short of it.

No great money-grabbing conspiracy here, get on with your lives.

All the "cheats" tend to go into a QA menu which is disabled for production builds these days. Legal and online modes are mainly the reason for not including these. Its hard enough getting approval for characters/vehicles without then checking for all the fun variations.

LEGO games do a good job of including cheats, especially now they do not disable the achievements! :D
