Managed to see some great flicks whilst browsing the film racks in the local video shop, don't really get to do that online as you tend to know what film it is you plan to watch so can just find it with a click of a button. Its a shame the rental shops have all but disappeared but i'm glad i managed to experience using one! Kids growing up today won't know what they missed out on,

I remember taking a video back which completely knackered up my video recorder. I never got to watch the film so I asked for my money back and the shop assistant didnt believe me so pushed it into the shop recorder to test it.....it knackered up the shop recorder too.

I don't see how a knackered cassette could damage two machines.. Being honest

No I don't and if strange nostalgia is the only logical reason for a business, it has absolutely no hope of existing.

You can kick back and get films instantly, see the synopsis instantly or even at the extremes (or not so extreme) download the whole film completely free. There is just so logical reason for the old rental model anymore.

It's like saying 'why would you miss cd/record shops when you can just listen to any album on spotify and if you don't like it skip to the next one'

Basically if you don't know, you don't know

There's no need to get all arsey about it

So how do you feel about businesses that sell British food to ex-pats or that sell sweets from when you were a kid?

Oh come on the contexts are completely different. Sweet shops are smaller, employ like one person, have no other competition for people who want that niche product. So basically exactly the opposite of the massive movie rental sector.

Usually the opposite, crappy VHS machines ruining a new tape.

It was the only shop open after 6 in my wee town, it was the local hang out for the movie nerds.

A short lived retail phenomena, from the advent of early 80s VHS to the mid noughties demise of rental DVDs.

    Nice while it lasted.

Those shops are selling items which are unavailable elsewhere. There's no niche market for hard copies of films to be rented out over the counter. Because the same films are available more cheaply and conveniently by other means.

This discussion about the video shop reminds me of the film. Be Kind Rewind.

Anyway, my local Blockbuster pulled out of my home town 10 years ago and Global followed not long after. I went once to the nearby Blockbuster in the neighbouring town, but it proved to too awkward.

Blockbuster could have had the chance to compete with Netflix as a rival, but they blew it.

I liked it and I miss it.

Going down the road with my little daughter to get a video and buy some popcorn.

It was a treat. I bought a weeks worth of her first anime from there 'Kiki's Delivery Service'.

Now it's more convenient, but the 'ritual' has gone.

You can still have ritual if you want it but you can't hold back more convenient (and mostly cheaper) innovation for the sake of rituals.

You can still go to the local shop for some ice cream and popcorn as you settle down to watch your downloaded film.

Yeah I used to love it, it was like a Friday night ritual for our family and our dog as the park was next to the video shop :D It was really exciting going to pick our films and the man who owned it was lovely to us. I even miss the trailers that used to be on videos.
That shut down and we started going to Blockbuster for a few years, still loved it but then it became really expensive and now its shut down, the closing down sale was the best though lol :P

Most tapes had Macrovision which did funny things to the picture and sound if you tried to copy it

All you had to do was take the Macrovison 'pin' out of the SCART cable connecting the two VCR's ;)

Having said that, I never even bothered with this with my parents VCR, it seemed to be devoid of Macrovision protection.

Our local blockbuster is now a mobile phone shop = sign of the times or what !!??!

Our independent video shop became a kids hairdressers for a few years and now it is a tattoo parlour!

It still has the neon video rental sign though :)

I miss going there! We used to rent a DVD most weekends and would spend as long choosing a dvd as we do choosing something on Netflix! Our shop had a basement where the horror (and porn) movies were. It was creepy down there but I loved it :)

Our local independent employed a specky youth to work the computer - probably the only PC in a ten mile radius at that point. He was like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. You had to form an orderly queue, step forward, present video, and he would type at lightning speed on the keyboard - all without conversation. He was a weird one. I'm sure he wanted to be an android when he grew up.

I miss renting DVDs from Blockbuster etc, although I don't miss video cassettes particularly. About the only advantage they had was you could stop the film and start it again from exactly the same spot :D

Indeed. Plus the ice cream and popcorn in video shops used to cost two or three times the supermarket prices.

Did video shops ever rent out Laserdiscs or were they just for the classical nerds?
