That can be the case but not last night. (And in fact Cilla finished at 21:59, 21:59 and 22:00, so ITV have tended to run a bit late. James J will not like the fact that News at Ten has started at these times on Mondays over the last month: 22:03, 22:00, 22:03, 22:04, and 22:02 last night. :))

Just to point out that last night, because of the BBC Music thing and also I think The Driver was a bit longer than a regular 9pm show, the BBC News started at two minutes past ten. Not that it'll make any difference because nobody's waiting for the news to start dead on 10pm, most channels' 9pm shows are still going on.
Yes, thankfully we never had The Hearts of Gold Awards with Esther Rantzen!

Well, they have had a go at this kind of thing, and in 2000 we got The People's Awards. And look at this...

They were on a Sunday evening on BBC1 that autumn and nobody watched them.

Interesting bit about News at When in that piece too.

Is 4 hours 35 minutes of X Factor and Strictly too much for one Saturday night?

For people who dont watch either the dominance on both Sat and Sun is way too much but they bring in the ratings so how can you argue? Although how people (if there are any) manage to watch both on the night I cannot imagine.

BBC1 drama #TheDriver finished with a disappointing 3.56m/16.4%, 180k down on last week.

I imagine some will, if they watch both catch up on TXF the next day during the daytime. This option makes it easier to miss TXF when its broadcast.

I agree that this is what happens. Unfortunately this drags the overnight down, and the overnight is what gets reported on Sunday.

Excellent for Pride of Britain and on a Tuesday as well.

BBC2 had a good night also with some quality programmes.

Do many viewers watch both shows though?

And I guess that both shows are popular, and will decrease in length as the weeks go on anyway

Yes that is why TXF starts low when it clashes with Strictly. The dent in both this weekend shows this.

Er yes they do, and 99.9% of the time BBC News at Ten starts. at. TEN.

Re: the ratings, good for Pride, Cats and Cox.

But if people are doing that the clash is less important surely?

Yet another BBC One drama that tonally occupies some strange territory between BBC One and BBC2.

David Morrissey is brilliant, and it wasn't that bad - but it's yet another example of how commissioners don't have their finger on the pulse and don't get what mainstream audiences want. BBC One should be grateful for Call The Midwife, Last Tango and Death In Paradise …

EastEnders held up well during the Emmerdale clash.
Emmerdale topped the soap ratings with its hour-long episode on Tuesday evening (October 7), but EastEnders edged ahead during the rival shows' latest clash period, overnight figures show.

    Emmerdale's hour-long episode averaged 5.99m (29.3%) at 7pm on ITV and 288k (1.4%)

EastEnders attracted 5.8m (26.9%) at 7.30pm on BBC One with the emotional aftermath. However, during the 30-minute clash period itself, Emmerdale had 5.76m and a 26.8% share - making EastEnders the winner of the direct head-to-head period.

The result was an unusual one as EastEnders traditionally loses out when an hour-long Emmerdale has a head-start in the schedules.
