I turned over to ITV +1 and watched the repeat of Tipping Point with Lorraine Kelly:o.

Around about the time Bill Bailey was about to do his millionth rendition of his Match of the Day routine.
I did catch the last hour unfortunately. Beyond awful.

His routine is so old it's got mould on it.

I was away from the computer last night. Most of the posts in this thread summed the program up for me.
I.e Alex Jones = plank of wood, Smokey Robinson = David Guest , Jessie J go away. Boy George keep off the ****, or maybe cigarettes is the better word to use.

At least they didn't wheel out Jackie Bird to present the show

That was indeed the only thing in its favour

    Fair enough.

    Comment tactfully withdrawn!

Although he sounds about as Scottish as I do and I was born in Haywards Heath :D

They should have sent for Sean Connery ;-)

Few people of the last generation from the north, sound northern on TV, You just wouldn't be allowed anywhere near TV if you didn't cover your northern accent.

Unless you goggled it you wouldnt know that Eric idle was a gerordie (well a sanddancer technically, or it could be called sunderland as its on the border), he got rid of the accent to get on TV.

Katherine Jenkins never calls herself an opera singer. Every time the word 'opera' appears in the newspaper there are lots of people moaning even though it never comes from her. She has chosen to do a wider range of music and leave opera to the 'fat ladies'!

    haha
Yes, KJ claimed that she was too pretty to be an opera singer.
Are you suggesting that KJ could choose to be an opera singer if she wanted to?

Oh, here is one of those "fat" opera singers that you mention: Her name is Anna Netrebko
    http://www.annanetrebko.com/

There are just a few more pretty opera singers out there so to suggest that you need to be fat to be an opera singer is silly

Has she been quoted as saying that exactly? I think she is just happy doing what she does and entertaining large audiences rather than specialising in a much smaller niche audience with things that perhaps she does not enjoy. It is her choice what she does. She is very successful at what she does and is not dependent on the normally subsidised opera market.

Yes I think she did say something like she did not "fit the mould of fat ulgy and big horns" but can't find the source just now.

to be honest, KJ herself does not bother me too much. I don't begrudge her success at all or her style of classical. It's more the media around her. I love pop / rock and classical and opera. I know some see it as elitist but there may be opera fans who are elitist themselves but the music is certainly not. So I often have people assume that because I like opera I must like KJ when in fact there are many opera singers with many cds/dvd of their own that I can buy. To be fair, opera is a niche market so most people have no idea that there are singers out there.

It's also a little annoying when she was the presenter on pop star to opera star coming across as an expert when in fact she is not. But that's TV - you need someone that people know in order to sell the show.

I would have loved to have seen Annie Lennox, Franz Ferdinand, The Proclaimers, and Travis make an appearance.

Their song "Why does it always rain on me?" would certainly have been very appropriate!

Also, what was up with Paloma's voice on her opening song? She sounded like she had just come from having a filling at the dentist and her mouth was still anaesthetised! I don't like her current single anyway but her rendition wasn't good.

I thought she sounded like something out of a horror film.

As a citizen of Edinburgh, can I please apologise on behalf of my city for a concert which, to quote Bart Simpson, proves it IS possible to "suck AND blow".

The weather did not help. We have had wonderful sunny days and sunsets to die for since July 1st. The day the world might be watching, in rolls the mist (we call it Haar) and the rain meaning that the view from the castle was non existent.

The castle sits up high on a dormant volcano. The audience must have been freezing and it explains the complete lack of atmosphere. When a singer holds out the mic for the crowd to sing along - only to be met with a wall of silence - you know you are in trouble.

The line up tried too hard. It should have been a Tattoo based show, imo - marching bands, bagpipes, some strong singers etc. Too much of a mix of pop/light opera/ alleged comics etc.

The BBC should have recorded this and cut it down to an hour.

Anyway, I am really sorry and will stand in the Corner of Shame for the rest of the day....:-(

As another citizen of Edinburgh can I apologise for this poster's dramatics.

No seriously, it was bizarre at times and I suppose they wanted a mix of artists but we've nothing to apologise for, it's not like you or I had a hand in it. I would've hated marching hands and pipers myself, we've already got the Tattoo, we don't need another one.

Fred Macauley is not, and has never been, funny. Jokes about Bob Geldof, Live Aid and the lyrics to Do They Know It's Christmas? Did he dig out his 1985 "joke" book in the hope that the retro thing would work?

John Miles was far and away the best performance of the night.

The only apology should be from the BBC for wasting more of the licence fee and explaining why this monstrosity ever got past the 'ideas' list on some interns ipad.

I still don't understand what it was for?

At least with the highly random Nelson Mandela tribute midway, there was some sort of hilarious focus to the event. But aside from that... Does Edinburgh just need its own little thing to say, "Yeah, we still exist!" while Glasgow gets all the attention?

Bidie, as I asked you on the BBC PoV page, why are you feeling the need to apologise?

I assume you did not organise neither the concert nor the weather.

I watched it on catch up on the iplayer and caught some bits I missed on the live show. Not too bad in retrospect - I am just grateful they did not wheel out old Macca at the end so he could murder his own songs. He either croaks completely out of tune or makes the audience sing the words.

I dread the unveiling of the closing act of the Games on Wednesday....

Fair enough. However I think most people consider Edinburgh to be a nice city. And as you didn't arrange the weather, then I don't think you need to apologise.

I think you mean Rod. I've seen no reference to Cliff being involved anywhere.

Paloma Faith sounds like that at the best of times.

I had no idea who Alfie Boe was when the Welsh girl interviewed him and after learning that he knew sod all about the Games I have no reason to find out.
